Job Summary:

This position is responsible for enhancing undergraduate education at Duke by guiding students through the integration of the many facets of undergraduate academic life into a fulfilling and coherent academic plan. Under the purview of the Director of the Academic Advising Center (AAC), the Global, Civic, and Cross-Disciplinary Opportunities Advisor will have particular expertise in a specific co-curricular field while serving as a college advisor and providing support to the AAC in various ways. The Global, Civic, and Cross-Disciplinary Opportunities Advisor will specifically focus on discussing and planning the integration of civic and global engagement opportunities into each student’s undergraduate experience.

Work Performed:

Program Management (55%)

  • Gather information about existing global, civic, and cross-disciplinary opportunities and track developing opportunities; synthesize information about global, civic, and cross-disciplinary opportunities to help undergraduate students better understand why, how, and what to incorporate into their undergraduate plans.
  • Provide leadership in developing collaborative partnerships with departments and programs to evaluate existing opportunities and develop future directions for undergraduate participation.
  • Identify needs in undergraduate education that pertain to a range of specified academic disciplinary areas, work independently to develop, propose, and create initiatives that respond to those needs, and work collaboratively and collegially with essential campus partners, including faculty and deans, to achieve those initiatives.
  • Develop and execute appropriate outreach to students.
  • In collaboration with the OUE Research Director and OUE’s division of Student Success leadership, define program and learning outcomes, plan, implement, and evaluate assessment protocols to measure those outcomes, and implement iterative program enhancements.

Advising (40%)

  • Meet individually with students to discuss and plan the integration of curricular, co-curricular, and experiential interests around global, civic, and cross-disciplinary opportunities into each student's undergraduate experience, including full academic planning to graduation.
  • Meet individually with students upon completion of a global/civic program to reflect on the program’s impact on the student’s academic and personal growth.
  • Serve as a college advisor for up to 12 new students each year.
  • Serve as a backup advisor when college advisors are unavailable to meet their students during the registration period and become the college advisor for students whose advisor is no longer able to serve in the role.
  • Participate fully with the rest of the AAC staff in summer advising efforts for the incoming class.
  • Hold regular office hours and be available to students on an ad-hoc basis and for walk-in advising.
  • Within the time allocated to advising, support the AAC in additional ways as determined by the director.

Other (5%)

  • Liaise with other campus units in the Office of Undergraduate Education, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs to support students’ academic success.
  • Serve on OUE and university committees.

Preferred Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience providing academic support, advising, teaching, or related engagement with students in a higher education setting.
  • Background experience (e.g., work, study, or service) in cross-cultural settings is strongly preferred.
  • Fluency with desktop applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with data management systems.
  • An understanding of student cognitive, social, and emotional development and learning strategies at the post-secondary level.
  • Strong oral, written, and intercultural communication skills.
  • Incorporates an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens into work responsibilities and processes.
  • Experience working directly with and elevating the ideas of people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:


Work requires communications, analytical, research, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a Master's degree program. A Ph.D. is preferred.

Experience:


Work requires 3 years of experience in academic advising, teaching, or related engagement with undergraduates OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
