Occupational Summary
Duke Utility & Engineering Services (DUES) provides the full range of utility and engineering services to Duke University and Duke Medical Center, including Chilled Water, Steam, Electrical HV Systems, Water (water, sewer, and stormwater), Energy Management, and Engineering. The Electrical HV Systems organization is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the high-voltage distribution system and campus site lighting. DUES is part of the Facilities Management Department (FMD), which reports to the Vice President for Facilities Services. This position reports to the High Voltage System Manager.
Work Performed
The Electrical HV Controls Technician assists in the calibration, troubleshooting, monitoring, analysis, and design of electronic control equipment associated with the university’s power distribution system.
Typical Duties
- Inspect, test, and troubleshoot a variety of electrical and electronic equipment, including sensors, control panels, input/output panels, electric meters, and protective relays related to the university’s power distribution system.
- Review high-voltage electrical control schematics, specifications, and equipment for new installations and renovations. Inspect projects during and after installation to ensure compliance with specifications prior to university acceptance.
- Perform approved maintenance duties according to instructions and maintenance schedules for all control systems connected to the campus power distribution network.
- Assist high-voltage system personnel in troubleshooting and maintaining the electrical HV SCADA system.
- Provide data necessary for the design and development of system modifications and to maintain accurate control diagrams.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education plus 2 years of formal technical training in electricity or electronics.
Experience
Work requires a working knowledge of control systems normally acquired through 2 years of experience in the installation, inspection, testing and repair of pneumatic, electricaland electronic control systems. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION
