Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting laboratory tests, experiments and determinations in support of Duke University research operations.

Work Performed

Process and cryopreserve specimens

Learn how to immunoprofile specimens on flow cytometry

Autoclave instruments and reagents

Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain laboratory equipment.

Learn Standard Operating Procedures

Attend weekly lab and departmental meetings

Generate experimental data through flow cytometry.

Manage and discard biohazard wastes

Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions.

Maintain database for raw data and organize/prepare scientific data for analysis by the principal investigator.

Assist with performing small and short-term basic experiments and completing individual parts of an overall large experiment/project

Compile, analyze, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results.

Develop plans for research experiments

Make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required

Keep inventory of animals and request cage cards as needed. Periodically check on the animal welfare

Monitor and provide care to mice and other animals

May require training in animal handling and procedures to assist research process. These include, and not limited to: breeding, genotyping, and drug administration (IV, IP, oral gavage, etc.) and organ collection.

Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.

Determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests.

Review work of lower-level laboratory personnel within designated areas and assist in training new personnel and summer interns

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.

Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Google Chrome
