Medical Lab Technician II in the External Referral Lab. Monday - Friday, 2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. On-call rotation on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

This position is eligible for the second-shift differential.

General Description

Perform a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Job duties are dependent on the laboratory and may be composed of a combination of the following duties and responsibilities related to the specialization.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • -Receive and process specimens as required by respective laboratory area procedures and protocols, CP and AP sendouts.
  • Contact providers regarding specimen rejections, ambiguous tests, canceled tests, missing consent forms, etc.
  • Obtain approval to process and ship tests that are not approved for send out and requests for new tests that have not been sent out before.
  • Prepare specimens for shipment by FedEx next-day air or courier pickup following the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR).
  • Create FedEx Air Bills.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies; reorder as required; stock supplies
  • Work with on-site Mayo and Lab Corp processors.
  • Work with Patient Account Associates for billing determinations prior to shipment of specimens.
  • Resolve Beaker reports: Specimen collected not received and Expected test list
  • Assist in training new personnel; provide technical assistance to new employees, students as assigned.
  • Investigate issues and provide advanced problem-solving, troubleshooting of external reference laboratory test ordering, required forms, and specimen handling, shipping, and reporting results.
  • Perform routine maintenance as required by laboratory procedures.
  • Responsible for day-to-day follow-up and resolution of escalated pre and post-analytical issues and questions for the Referral Lab.
  • Act as the person in charge (PIC) as well as a resource person /role model.

Required Qualifications

Education:

AA or AS Degree.

Minimal educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director if minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.

Experience:

No experience is required (meet CLIA requirements)

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by a nationally recognized board/agency (required, within 18 months)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience involving patient contact, customer service in a medical setting, strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory and hospital computer systems is helpful. Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling.
  • Ability to demonstrate required dexterity, knowledge, and ability to complete assigned laboratory tasks and skills, attention to detail and compliance with all appropriate regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
