General Description of the Role
The Director of Nursing, Operations serves as a key team member on the DUHS Chief Nurse Executive Office team and is responsible for enterprise-wide DUHS Nursing Analytics, Nursing Health System project management initiatives, Nursing Health System operations improvement, and the management of the Nursing Administrative Support Associate team.
This position will lead and influence multiple projects for our Nurse Executive Office team, DUHS CEPD, DUHS Accreditation and Regulatory, Advanced Practice, Central Staffing Office, and Workforce Development Offices. Projects in this portfolio include nursing job architecture and transformation, staffing and scheduling initiatives and other workforce management project. This role will lead the design and development of the centralized administrative support associates team promoting systemness across our Health System.
Project Management
- Quality Improvement Support - to include the organization and execution of health system-wide quality improvement efforts as identified through the annual planning process and as assigned by senior leadership. In addition, be the point of contact with external organizations and programs related to clinical services. The scope could include all entities across DUHS: DUH, DRH, Duke Raleigh, DHIP, PDC, and clinics.
- Develops innovative, realist solutions to support the DUHS Nursing strategic planning.
- Leads quality initiatives by assisting with data analysis, project design, inter-rate reliability studies and project documentation. Leads and participates in best practices of quality improvement by utilizing evidence-based practice findings to enhance the processes of data validity and data reliability.
- Uses data driven decision making to evaluate effectiveness of DUHS investments and programs. Provide coaching and training on the use and interpretation of metrics. Able to manage data and develop predictive models. Retrieves, reviews, compiles, analyzes and distributes reports on an on-going basis.
- Meeting with the Chief Nurse Executive, Nursing VPs, and Nursing CNOs as needed /requested and to keep them informed of nursing priorities, initiatives, and progress on DUHS Nursing Strategic Plan.
- Partners with leadership in analysis of processes across DUHS (health system), identifies gaps in the process, determines impact to the organization, recommends and coaches action plans and timeline to address issues.
- Builds relationships with leaders and stakeholders to manage effective processes and programs to improve the value of the patient care experience, reduce waste and ensure compliance according to established standards and measures.
- Monitor level of resources utilized in service delivery and determine appropriateness of resource consumption in the service; enhance effectiveness and efficiency of as well as satisfaction with patient care delivery; develop recommendations on appropriate care, redesigning as necessary, and coordinate implementation.
Analytics
- Collaborate with DUHS nursing leadership and department leaders across the health system (Business Transformation Office, Central Staffing Office, Human Resources, Finance, Clinical Education and Professional Development, DUSON and DUSOM to lead analysis and deliver insights to solve challenging clinical, research, and operational problems and identify opportunities.
- Use predictive analytics to inform and drive clinical decisions.
- Managing by fact, the director will help senior leadership and clinical leaders make well-informed, thoughtful clinical decisions to impact patient safety, quality of care, operations, and evidenced based decisions.
- Collaborate closely with the DUHS Nursing executive team, senior management and operations leaders to understand and deliver on key data needs, ensuring standard reporting, and determining meaningful metrics.
- Partner with DUHS Senior Nursing leadership to provide focused analyses or improvement efforts and management of administrative projects and efforts.
- Monitor performance to include management of the DUHS Nursing scorecard and reporting of related performance metrics.
- Oversee the design and development of DUHS Nursing performance reporting solutions and nursing executive dashboard. This includes the integration of complex data sources, the creation of reporting solutions, and the delivery method.
- Develop DUHS Nursing dashboards to display data in a meaningful and actionable manner. Serve as the central point of contact related to internal reporting of nursing metrics. The scope includes DUHS: DUH, DRH, Duke Raleigh Hospital, DHIP, PDC, and all clinics.
- Develop DUHS Nursing score card and/or dashboard indicators in conjunction with the nursing staff and the hospital leadership as a mechanism for tracking adherence to agreed upon nursing goals. The scope includes DUHS: DUH, DRH, Duke Raleigh Hospital, DHIP, PDC, and all clinics.
Supervisory
- Provide administrative oversight of DUHS Administrative Support Associate team
- Provide direct supervision to include planning for resources, selection, coordinating orientation, evaluation, coaching and termination.
- Direct the work of the team, provide guidance and expertise in the development of work standards, assign work and develop process improvement plans.
- Position control, oversight of the processes used to receive and process a request for position.
- Position management, the design and execution of the position management function, which aligns position approvals with departmental budgets and links with the release of positions for hire.
- Supervision - Direct supervision of staff within the assigned area of responsibility.
Budget/Finance
- Preparing and administering operating budgets incorporating long and short-term goals and forecasting personnel, equipment and professional development needs. Managing and monitoring the Department’s expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability.
- Productivity reporting - the development and ongoing maintenance of the productivity reporting process, to include data integrity
- Ensure appropriate bottom line targets are developed and met relative to financial performance through revenue enhancement and cost containment, including but not limited to, maintenance of current volumes and increasing volumes through new service offerings, physician recruitment and involvement in third party negotiations, attention to variable expenses, capital purchases and development of outcomes management; recommend financial targets and prepare budgets; monitor financial variances; recommend and implement corrective action.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree required.
Experience: Work requires seven years of progressive administrative experience, generally in a hospital, health care or similar service industry to become proficient in managing quality of care and financial performance over assigned hospital service line. A Master's degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration or a related field may be substituted for experience on a 1:1 basis.
