Program Coordinator, Climate Change and Global Health

Job Description
The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) seeks to achieve health equity for vulnerable groups and individuals around the world. The Institute is making a signature investment in and commitment to climate change and global health. As such, DGHI is seeking a highly motivated, flexible individual to join our expanding team as a Program Coordinator. The Program Coordinator will work with the DGHI Climate and Global Health initiative; an ideal candidate is someone with an interest in global health, health equity, and health effects of climate change, who has strong organizational and communication skills, is detail-oriented, and can communicate and collaborate with colleagues from various backgrounds and teams around the world.
This person will be the primary administrator for the new strategic, taking a lead role in launching multiple new initiatives and pursuing grant funding to support those efforts, building core systems and operating procedures, and coordinating activities across multiple research/project locations in the US and internationally. They will be expected to: coordinate within and across multiple projects and research initiatives related to climate change and health; lead internal and external communications efforts; and collaborate effectively with multiple partners and teams. The Program Coordinator will report to the co-chairs managing the initiative, Marc Jeuland and Mercedes. Bravo.
The Coordinator may have the opportunity to work directly on specific Climate and Global Health projects with DGHI faculty, students, and partners. This may involve infrequent international travel, typically about two weeks in length, to contribute to projects in the field, depending on the candidate’s interest and the needs of the initiative.
Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate regular standing meetings of the core initiative teams, as well as ad-hoc meetings among faculty, staff, students, and field partners engaged in the initiative. In doing so, develop agendas, take notes, circulate information in a timely manner, and manage task lists (10%)
- Lead efforts to establish and maintain strong working relationships with faculty, students and other university partners, external partners, and the broader community (10%).
- Assist in designing, advertising, and managing activities under the initiative, such as administering the pilot research grant activity, coordinating travel and engagement with international partners, and organizing speakers or convening activities (10%).
- Liaise with domestic and international partners to coordinate collaborative research and intervention opportunities (10%).
- Working with key faculty, develop proposals for internal and external funding to boost the resources available to the initiative (20%).
- Provide research support for key research projects of the initiative: a) develop and submit documentation and information for Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews; b) draft study documents such as protocols, consent forms, data collection forms, etc. to ensure data security and provenance; c) conduct literature reviews, lead qualitative data analysis and contribute to other aspects of research design, analysis, and writing; d) contribute as an author or co-author to the development of scientific publications or presentations; and e) as needed, help oversee the work of student research assistants or mentor others in research tasks, and assist with budget and resource management, in coordination with DGHI research grant support personnel (30%).
- Support internal and external communications, including developing and maintaining a website, newsletters and news stories, and social media accounts to disseminate information to partners within Duke and the broader community (5%).
- Represent the Program at Duke and external events, interfacing with partners across a variety of formats and settings (5%).
- Support Program faculty as other needs arise.
Required Experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Ability to think critically, solve problems and present solutions effectively
- Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with individuals from a variety of different backgrounds and nationalities
- Excellent written communications skills for disseminating information in numerous formats, including newsletters, research writing, grant and report writing, technical writing and editing, presentations, social media, and other materials
- Excellent attention to detail, follow-through, and ability to display a commitment to high standards
- Undergraduate degree
Preferred Experience
- Master’s degree and prior experience in climate change and health, research administration, and/or study coordination
- Interest and skill in data visualization, health communication, and dissemination information to the public in engaging and creative ways
- Training or experience relevant to international work
- Experience in writing for grants or research publications
- Prior experience with management and coordination of multiple projects and/or teams
Education
Work requires communication and analytical skills normally acquired through a 4 year college education.
Experience
Work requires a general knowledge of research methods, procedures and OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE experience. activities normally acquired through 1 year of social science research
