OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

The person in this role will be responsible for participating in the implementation and execution of intervention programs designed to prevent HIV among Black women in NC with Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This role involves culturally congruent community engagement, recruiting beauty salons, training salon stylists serving black women in NC, participant recruitment support and retention, innovative engagement of the community, and routine data collection, and travel across NC. Ideal candidates possess awareness of HIV/AIDS health disparities and prevention, stakeholder management skills, strong organizational skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for making a positive impact in marginalized communities, and the ability to travel routinely to ensure community connections.

SUPERVISOR

This position reports to the Assistant Research Practice Manager with a dotted line to the study PI.

WORK PERFORMED

Research Operations:

  • Screens participants in person or over the phone for non-complex studies (e.g., questionnaire, data registry, scripted) outside of the EHR.
  • Organize outreach events to facilitate recruitment and engagement including scheduling, logistics, and ensuring smooth execution.
  • Recruits research participants according to study protocol and follows standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Employ strategies to maintain retention rates. Evaluate processes to identify problems with retention. Employs and may develop strategies to maintain recruitment rates and evaluate processes to identify problems.
  • Schedules participants for research visits and prepares necessary documents, equipment, supplies, etc. in compliance with the protocol.
  • Conducts and documents non-complex visits and assists with establishing and maintaining study-level documentation.
  • Coordinate and facilitate health related continuing educational sessions for salon owners and stylists.
  • Under supervision, prepares for study monitoring and audit visits.

Safety and Ethics:

  • Under supervision may collect information about AEs, identified in the protocol or investigator brochure.
  • Conducts and documents consent for participants in non- complex studies. Assists with the development of consent plans and documents for participants.

Data:

  • Collect data from participants during outreach events and educational sessions, including demographic data, feedback, and any relevant intervention insights.
  • Under supervision, corrects and documents incomplete, inaccurate or missing data for non-complex studies and follows SOPs for quality assurance.
  • Provide routine reports documenting salon and participant progress.
  • Follows required processes, policies, and systems to ensure data security and provenance. In addition, recognizes and reports security of physical and electronic data vulnerabilities.

Site and Study Management:

  • Records participant accrual information and consent documentation for non-complex studies in clinical research management system.
  • Records basic protocol information in clinical research management system.
  • For studies with simple supplies or equipment, assists with ensuring that there are ample supplies and that equipment is in good working order. Ensure that studies are conducted in compliance with institutional requirements and other policies.

Leadership and Professionalism:

  • Maintains Duke and project specific training requirements. Keeps current with research updates by attending key external departmental meetings (i.e., Research Wednesday, RPN, additional training, etc.).
  • Navigates processes and people involved in Duke clinical research, demonstrates organizational awareness, and has the interpersonal skills necessary to get work done efficiently.
  • Demonstrates resilience and is adaptive to change. Uses advanced subject matter expertise in the therapeutic area or clinical research to solve problems. Communicates effectively with others, regardless of reporting relationship, to accomplish shared work objectives.
  • Participates in study team meetings. Regularly communicate with the research team to share participant feedback, challenges, and successes to inform interventions in real-time. Collaborate with fellow intervention coordinators, clinical research coordinators, researchers, and community partners using effective communication.

Community Engagement and Outreach:

  • Establish and nurture relationships with salon owners, stylists, and clients. A strong sense of community and ability to engage authentically is required.
  • Recognize the unique cultural context of salon settings and Black communities to create a safe and supportive environment that tailor’s outreach to resonate with Black women.
  • Be an advocate for HIV prevention in the community. Also, dispel myths and stigma related to HIV and PrEP in the community.
  • Help Black women take charge of their health by providing evidence-based knowledge and resources.

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES

Experience

  • One year of relevant experience (research, clinical, interaction with study population, program coordination).
  • Prior experience in community outreach, health education, or project coordination is preferred. Experience with randomized control trials preferred.
  • Track record of providing HIV/AIDS health education and community HIV prevention efforts is preferred.

SKILLS

  • Can easily use computing software and web-based applications (e.g., Microsoft Office products, databases, and internet browsers).
  • Understanding of Black culture in the Southern region of the US is preferred.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Experience organizing events, workshops, etc. preferred.
  • Must have dependable transportation and a valid driver's license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Anticipated Pay Range

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $ 20.35 to USD $30.82.
