Duke Institute for Health Innovation

Seeking undergraduate or masters level students for part time internship with the Duke Institute for Health Innovation (DIHI). Seeking students studying statistics, computer science, engineering, or mathematics with strong quantitative sciences and programming background. Interns will join a small team of health care providers, software developers, and statisticians to develop data-driven products to improve health care delivery at Duke University Health System.

DIHI data science pilot projects seek to analyze medical claims and electronic health record data and deliver model results to clinicians to provide personalized health care. Previous examples of projects include identifying patients at high risk of kidney failure for subspecialty referral and identifying patients at high risk of sepsis for treatment with antibiotics and intravenous fluids.

During the internship, students will learn about the role of predictive analytics and machine learning in health care and will gain extensive experience working with real data. Scope of work includes validating and normalizing raw claims and electronic health record data in order to build meaningful features to be used in machine learning models, running baseline machine learning models, and building user interfaces for model results to be incorporated into clinical care. The intern will work closely with DIHI staff, statistics faculty and graduate students, and software developers. The intern will attend weekly 1-hour team meetings and will be expected to work 8-12 hours/week. Work time, place, and start date are flexible. The intern will be included in the publication of any work that results from project work. The intern will report to DIHI staff.

There are two intern tracks: Data Science and Web Application Development.

  • Successful data science applicants will have at least 2 years of experience with R, and/or Python.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience interacting with databases through SQL.

  • Successful web application development applicants will have at least 2 years of experience with a web framework such as Node.js, Ruby on Rails, or Django.
  • Preference will be given to applications with JavaScript experience.

This is an excellent opportunity for students seeking to gain experience working with healthcare data, whether the student hopes to pursue a career providing healthcare or in the digital health industry. Machine learning in healthcare is an emerging field and the team working on these projects is on the cutting edge.
