The opportunity

You will help our U.S. government defense clients navigate the complex world of modern data engineering and analytics by leading product development teams. We’ll look to you to provide our clients with a unique business perspective on how to build tools that can transform and improve their entire organization – starting with key business issues they face. Our Testing Lead opportunity requires skills in the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of new and innovative software solutions. You will be driving the testing on our product development teams, working in tandem with product managers to confirm our solutions are adhere to quality, usability, and mission need. We are not building solutions that only meet the ask; we are building solutions that cater to an organization’s nuanced needs. This role will focus on EY’s U.S. government defense clients to deliver professional services and manage business development activities.

Your key responsibilities

You’ll spend most of your time working with our product development teams to test our custom software development solutions that tackle frontline mission priorities.

Also included:

  • Testing Frameworks and Methodologies: Design and implement comprehensive testing strategies, frameworks, and methodologies to ensure the quality and reliability of software applications. Utilize best practices in manual and automated testing to achieve optimal results.
  • Test Planning and Execution: Develop detailed test plans, including test cases, test scripts, and test data. Oversee the execution of test plans, ensuring thorough coverage of functional, performance, security, and regression testing.
  • Lead and Mentor Testing Team: Manage and mentor a team of testers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment. Provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to team members.
  • Resource Allocation and Management: Allocate resources effectively to ensure that testing activities are completed on time and within budget. Monitor team performance and productivity, making adjustments as needed to meet project goals.
  • Quality Standards and Metrics: Establish and maintain quality standards and metrics to measure the effectiveness of testing activities. Continuously monitor and analyze testing results to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, product managers, and business analysts, to ensure that testing activities are aligned with project requirements and objectives. Facilitate effective communication and collaboration to resolve issues and achieve project goals.
  • Automation Strategy: Develop and implement test automation strategies to improve efficiency and coverage of testing activities. Select and manage appropriate testing tools and frameworks to support automation efforts.
  • Tool Management: Oversee the selection, implementation, and maintenance of testing tools and technologies. Ensure that tools are used effectively to support testing activities and achieve desired outcomes.

Skills and attributes for success

Technical Expertise

  • Testing Methodologies: Extensive knowledge of various testing methodologies, including manual and automated testing, functional testing, performance testing, security testing, and regression testing. Proficiency in designing and executing comprehensive test plans and test cases.
  • Automation Tools: Strong experience with test automation tools and frameworks such as Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, QTP, and others. Ability to develop and maintain automated test scripts to improve testing efficiency and coverage.
  • Defect Analysis: Ability to analyze and identify defects, determine their root causes, and collaborate with development teams to resolve them. Strong problem-solving skills to address testing challenges and ensure the quality and reliability of software applications.
  • Risk Management: Expertise in identifying potential risks and issues related to testing activities and developing mitigation strategies to address them. Ability to conduct testing in a controlled and risk-aware manner.

Leadership and Team Management

  • Proven ability to lead and mentor a team of testers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment. Experience in managing team dynamics, resolving conflicts, and promoting professional growth.
  • Project Management: Effective resource allocation and management skills to ensure that testing activities are completed on time and within budget. Ability to monitor team performance and productivity, making adjustments as needed to meet project goals.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with stakeholders, including military personnel, executives, and cross-functional teams. Ability to translate technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.

A successful Testing Manager will deliver results through:

  • Comprehensive Test Plans: Developing and executing detailed test plans that cover all aspects of software testing, including functional, performance, security, and regression testing. Ensuring thorough coverage and identifying potential issues early in the development cycle.
  • Efficient Test Execution: Leading the testing team to execute test plans efficiently and effectively, ensuring that all test cases are completed on time and any defects are promptly identified and addressed.
  • Timely Issue Resolution: Leading the investigation and resolution of defects and issues identified during testing. Collaborating with development teams to ensure that defects are addressed promptly and effectively, minimizing impact on project timelines.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Working closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment on project goals and requirements. Facilitating open communication and collaboration to resolve issues and achieve project objectives.
  • Automation Strategy: Developing and implementing a robust test automation strategy to improve testing efficiency and coverage. Selecting and managing appropriate automation tools and frameworks to support the automation efforts.
  • Continuous Integration: Integrating automated tests into the continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipeline to ensure that testing is an integral part of the development process and that issues are identified and resolved quickly.

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • DoD or government experience preferred
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in software testing and quality assurance, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership or managerial role. Proven track record of managing and delivering successful testing projects.
  • Testing Tools and Frameworks: Proficiency in using testing tools and frameworks such as Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, QTP, LoadRunner, and others. Experience with test management tools like HP ALM, Jira, or TestRail.
  • Automation Expertise: Strong experience in developing and maintaining automated test scripts using tools like Selenium, Appium, or similar. Ability to integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Relevant Certifications: Possession of relevant certifications such as ISTQB Certified Tester, Certified Software Test Professional (CSTP), Certified Software Quality Analyst (CSQA), or equivalent is preferred
  • Must be comfortable working in-person as needed in the greater Washington, DC area

Due to the nature of our work in the Government and Public Sector, work may be required to be completed at client, EY and/or contractor sites. Our goal is to assign professionals to projects within a commutable distance of their work location office. In certain circumstances, travel may be required beyond your work location based on client and project needs. Candidates should be willing to travel on average 25% to 30% or more in a hybrid environment.

What we offer
We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $141,200 to $258,900. The salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $169,500 to $294,300. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options. Join us in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 40-60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year. Under our flexible vacation policy, you’ll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances.
