Department Summary
The Department of Infectious Diseases and Host-Microbe Interactions at Genentech seeks to deliver novel therapeutics for gram-negative bacterial infections by leveraging microbiological and computational techniques.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
The Opportunity
The Department of Infectious Diseases and Host-Microbe Interactions is seeking a rigorous, creative, and highly motivated individual to join our research group as part of the Genentech internship program.
This position entails working with scientists across multiple departments to advance our understanding of how antibacterial molecules interact with pathogenic bacteria.
In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to leverage microbiology, molecular biology, and computational approaches to interrogate gram-negative antibacterial molecules.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are
Required Education: Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors: Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology or a related field.
Required Skills:
Basic microbiology method (growing bacteria, sterile culture techniques), molecular biology skills (one or more of these skills; cloning/plasmid construction/ genetics/RNAseq/sequencing/transcriptomics/QPCR).
Genetic Engineering of Bacteria, i.e. combinatorial genetics, and/or plasmid construction.
Proven track record of experimental design, innovation, and interpretation of results as evident by presentations, collaborations, and/or peer-reviewed publications and a passion for learning, developing, and growing as a scientist.
Documentation of data and experiments, as well as oral presentations in small and large group settings.
Ability to interact with scientists from different areas of expertise and to communicate professionally.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
Experience culturing BSL2 level bacterial strains, in chemistry and/or computational approaches is a plus but not required.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $46.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
