The Position

Genentech’s Hillsboro Oregon campus—Hillsboro Innovative Therapies (HIT)—serves as a critical hub for emerging cell & gene therapy manufacturing. Housed within a modern 75-acre facility just outside Portland, HIT is at the forefront of advancing cell and gene therapy medicines through accelerated clinical and commercial manufacturing capabilities, aligning with Genentech’s mission to bring transformative therapies to patients.

This role is an essential part of our Facilities & Engineering team, which is committed to ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of our plant equipment, building systems, and utilities. As a member of this team, you will work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality to optimize asset lifecycle management, implement risk-based strategies, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Through the application of predictive maintenance techniques and industry-best practices, the team plays a key role in supporting sustainable, high-quality operations.

The Opportunity

As a Plant Engineer, you will be responsible for managing the complete lifecycle of critical assets to ensure reliability, efficiency, and operational safety. You will lead efforts in applying world-class reliability strategies, predictive maintenance techniques, and continuous improvement initiatives to support sustainable operations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the lifecycle of plant equipment, process systems, utilities, and building infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.

  • Developing and implementing asset criticality procedures, risk assessments, and maintenance strategies.

  • Driving root cause analysis (RCA) and championing continuous improvement projects to eliminate recurring equipment issues.

  • Supporting startup, qualification, and validation activities for new systems and equipment.

  • Applying predictive maintenance techniques like thermography, vibration analysis, and ultrasound to prevent failures and maximize asset reliability.

  • Conducting risk assessments utilizing methods like FMEA to identify and mitigate potential operational risks.

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including Maintenance, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality, to align asset and reliability strategies with organizational goals.

Who You Are:

  • You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related discipline along with 3+ years of relevant experience managing equipment reliability and lifecycle.

  • You possess a background in manufacturing, design, or construction.

  • You possess demonstrated ability to apply experience and hands-on mechanical skills to investigate system deficiencies.

  • You possess a thorough working knowledge of reliability centered maintenance practices, condition based maintenance techniques, and predictive maintenance techniques.

  • You possess an understanding of biopharmaceutical manufacturing, process equipment, and supporting utility systems.

  • You possess strong stakeholder management and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to collaborate across a matrixed environment.

Preferred Experience:

  • You possess experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry and specific experience in utilities, engineering, and Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP).

  • Formal project management experience

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Oregon is $78,900 - $146,500. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed in this link.
