The Position

The Opportunity:

In this position you will be senior leader of the Pricing, Contracting & Distribution (PCD) organization and play a critical role in the overall development and management of the function, lead a larger-scale team of strategy managers( 5-person team), can serve as a substitute for the Lead, and personally participate in and influence strategic pricing, contracting and distribution assessment, analysis and decision-making across multiple Genentech products. Your role will require you to drive for objective and strategic decisions across multiple CMG Squads and Squad Leads, as well as helping coordinate pricing, contracting, and distribution execution across 32 ecosystem field teams. Your role will also require you to lead and embed enterprise capabilities in contract performance analytics for large TA programs, the integration of value and evidence into pricing and contracting strategy, considerations around policy and pricing, and enhanced cross-portfolio informed decision making, including management of revenue and risk.

You will lead a team of direct reports. You will oversee development of pricing, contracting and distribution strategies for the assigned therapeutic area(s)- Neuroimmunology and Neurodegeneration - that optimize patient access, the value of Genentech's portfolio and competitive advantage. This includes leading cross-functional strategy development teams, building effective relationships across all Squads and CE Leadership relevant to the assigned therapeutic area(s) and scenario analysis/modeling for overall financial and legal viability.

As Genentech’s portfolio continues to expand and increase in complexity, it is expected that your team will also set Pricing Contracting Distribution strategy recommendations for launch programs that involve combination therapies, new formulations, unique modalities, or impact orphan diseases. Given the evolving healthcare landscape and evolving market you and your team will work very closely with leaders across Government Affairs, Corporate Communications, and other Marketing Leadership to appropriately communicate the value of our products and/or develop value based agreement models that will support Genentech’s leadership role in sustainably providing innovative medicines. As a leader in CMG with deep access expertise, you may be asked to serve as a key strategic member on a Squad Leadership Team if there is a need for a part time access partner.

Key Job Responsibilities:

    • Develop and provide pricing and contracting education to Squads and Ecosystems to ensure that they can embed access expertise within their own respective teams. Also, serve as a leadership resource to help train the trainer to scale access-related learnings throughout CMG.

  • Lead a team that fully leverages Talent Flow and New Ways of Working across functions, field teams, and squads. This means appropriately moving talent towards prioritize work and mentoring/coaching strategy managers to work in a matrixed environment

Functional Expertise / Thought Leadership:

  • Broad Therapeutic Area Access & Value Thought Leadership

    • Provide Access Thought Leadership: Leverages systems/tools and feedback from partners/stakeholders to generate relevant market access insights and elucidate trends regarding brand, key therapeutic area analogs/competitors, and critical customer segments.

    • Stay abreast of macro trends in the healthcare environment that potentially impact current and/or future product pricing, contracting and distribution and associated strategies across Genentech’s product portfolio (i.e. combination indications, unique diagnostic markers, personalized health care, increase use of new modalities like gene therapy, digital health)

    • Playing the lead role in cross-squad assessment and integration of pricing, contracting and distribution strategies, plans and tactics

    • Serve in leadership access roles in Access CoPs and in those squads where a part time ABP is appropriate

    • Provide a leadership pricing and value perspective with Global colleagues and Global Access leadership, as US input has become much more relevant to Roche (and informing some critical global pricing approaches) with U.S. now representing 60% of Roche revenue

    • Provide a leadership perspective on Genentech pipeline developments, as these relate to pricing, contracting and distribution strategy development and strategic option

  • Strategy & Contract Effectiveness, Profitability & Measurement

    • Lead identification and recommendations to assess strategy effectiveness for all products within the assigned therapeutic area(s) across all stages of the lifecycle

    • Coach and lead the adoption of profitability analyses, contract effectiveness, data based decision making across the team, Squads and CE Leadership teams, to fully embed in contract decision making.

    • Power user of the systems and tools that support market access contract decision making and carries significant knowledge of contract/no contract forecasting methodologies and their application into strategy development, including monitoring and facilitating the sharing of learnings and insights.

    • Play a lead role in developing and implementing departmental pricing, contracting and distribution models and other tools for analysis and assessment.

  • Pricing & Policy Thought Leadership

    • Collecting, interpreting and disseminating internal and external pricing, contracting and distribution information to help customers, partners and other stakeholders with timely decision-making

    • With regards to pricing and distribution issues, serve as key contributor and partner with Government Affairs for federal and state policy formation / identification of strategic implications to GNE (including responses to Congressional policy makers and the Administration when needed)

    • Providing strategic input / guidance on all policy efforts led by Government Affairs, Legal and Government Pricing that may impact gross/net product pricing or other innovating pricing initiatives

Strategy & Planning Across the Lifecycle:

  • Oversee and lead pricing, contracting and distribution strategies for the assigned therapeutic area(s) and support integrated access planning processes

  • Lead development of strategies and recommendations to optimize Genentech's pricing, contracting and distribution effectiveness, patient access and competitive advantage for all products within the assigned therapeutic area(s) across all stages of the lifecycle including partnering with the Policy & Pipeline Access Strategy on Squad aligned pipeline molecules, business development assets/ merger & acquisition analyses in working with Business Development and Roche Partnering. This includes liaising with Global Access to ensure there are shared learnings and understanding of US Market & Rest of World Strategies

  • Proactively identify and leading initiatives to implement new / innovative pricing and contracting opportunities (dependent on brand / portfolio needs and / or in partnership with key external accounts

  • Providing in-depth, accurate analyses, modeling, assumptions, recommendations and solutions for optimal pricing, contracting and distribution scenarios to meet Genentech's strategic, financial and operational objectives. Includes articulating operational complexities, operational pull-through, implications, requirements, impacts and the like for all recommended strategies

  • Identify, lead, oversee a variety of special projects, including ongoing market research and analysis

Strategy to Execution Support

  • Building relationships across the business, working collaboratively with all internal/external customers, often leading cross-functional strategy core teams.

  • Act as the lead contact on all internal and external communication regarding pricing, contracting and distribution strategies, philosophies and practices for the assigned therapeutic area(s). Includes overseeing development of detailed communication and implementation plans to effectively roll-out new or changing strategies to the Squads and Ecosystems. This entails close collaboration with Corporate Communications, Investor Relations, and Marketing Functions

  • Ensure your team accurately tracks and communicates all relevant pricing, contracting and distribution trends and issues in a timely and clear manner to internal customers, partners and other stakeholders, including global partners

  • Ensuring pull-through plans and tools are considered in the strategy development process and decision making process by squads.

Who you are:

  • Bachelors Degree (general business, managed health care, or finance disciplines are preferred)

  • 12 years' cross-functional experience in account management, channel management, contracting, finance, health economics, managed care, market research, marketing, pricing, strategic planning and/or other related fields within the pharmaceutical/biotechnology or related industry

  • 4 or more years' people management experience

  • Must demonstrate 4 or more years' specific experience effectively leading cross-functional strategy development teams

  • Experience in other functions within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry is preferred, e.g., field sales, legal, market planning, market or sales analytics, etc.

  • Experience leading larger-scale departmental planning processes, to include development and implementation of such plans, goals and metrics

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or other related Graduate-level degree is preferred (e.g., PharmD or PhD)

This role requires a presence at our SSF, Genentech Campus;

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California is $211,900/yr to $393,500/yr. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
