The Position

We are looking for a highly experienced and strategic Safety Professional to join our site SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) team. This role is crucial for elevating safety program standards and performance, requiring a commitment to continuous improvement.

The Opportunity

The Principal EHS Program Manager will play a critical role in developing, implementing, and optimizing safety programs across our Drug Substance Bio-manufacturing Operations. This position requires expert-level conceptual and practical knowledge of safety coupled with the ability to solve highly complex problems that impact the broader organization. Working with full autonomy and receiving minimal guidance, this role influences site-wide strategy and builds consensus among diverse stakeholders to ensure a highly mature safety culture.The successful candidate will have a bias to action who doesn't wait for instructions to mitigate risks. We are looking for a self-starter with a 'just-do-it' attitude—someone who proactively identifies gaps and moves at pace to implement solutions before they become issues.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Execution & Delivery:

  • Lead the implementation, and maintenance of organization-specific SHE programs, i.e. process safety, behavior based safety, incident management and SHE risk.

  • Drive continuous improvement of the environment and safety culture, ensuring alignment with long-term company objectives and industry best practices.

  • Collaborate with team members to design and implement standardized, scalable workflows, eliminating the reliance on ad-hoc interventions.

Process Safety & Risk Management:

  • Responsible for the systematic identification, evaluation, mitigation, and monitoring of risks that could harm people, operations, or the environment.

  • Perform comprehensive and complex risk assessments (JSA, JHA, HIRA) for non-office activities and manufacturing processes.

  • Lead Process Safety assessments to identify and mitigate hazards related to chemical handling, hazardous materials, and physical agents.

Incident Management & Functional Business Partnership:

  • As a conduit between the SHE department and an assigned area of functional support, provide, coaching, and guidance in site safety programs, including Behavior Based Safety (BBS), STARI management, monthly area safety inspections, training, and the promotion of safety culture.

  • Lead investigation for workplace incidents or near-misses, utilizing advanced root-cause analysis to prevent recurrences that occur within areas of functional support .

  • Understand and track corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to prevent recurrence, ensuring effective implementation and closure.

  • Partner in establishing and monitoring robust SHE metrics, leveraging KPIs such as LTIR to identify trends, mitigate risks, and to drive data-driven decision making.

Technical Influence & Functional Guidance:

  • Serve as a senior technical resource and mentor for colleagues, providing functional guidance without formal people management responsibility.

  • Lead high-impact project teams at the site and in global forums when appropriate.

Who you are

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or a closely related field.

  • Certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of 7 or more years of relevant EHS experience.

  • Industry Experience: Previous experience in medical diagnostics, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical manufacturing is strongly preferred.

  • Anticipatory Thinking: Constantly scans the internal and external environment to predict and prevent future hazards rather than simply reacting to incidents.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $120,400 - $223,600. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
