Principal Product Manager, In-Vehicle SDKs (Commercial Software)

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to work from the Technical Center in Mountain View, CA three times per week, at minimum.

The Role:

General Motors is seeking a technically-savvy Principal Product Manager to drive the In-Vehicle SDK (Software Development Kit) product for Commercial Fleets. As the OEM, we see a unique opportunity for us to transform the vehicle into a ubiquitous tool for our fleet customers, expanding its purpose beyond moving cargo and people from point to point. As the In-Vehicle SDK Product Manager, you will be responsible for identifying customer problems, building solutions using software to address them and in turn, translating them into business opportunities.

This position will need to be able to articulate the value, scope requirements, and work with engineering, design, and teams across the enterprise to build connected digital experiences inside the vehicle. Besides having a strong background in Product Management, this role requires a deep technical expertise in SDKs and developer platforms. Having a high attention to detail, and being adept at influencing across large, complex organizations without authority will be crucial for the success of this position.

What You’ll Do

  • Drive strategy and product roadmap for GM’s Commercial Fleet In-Vehicle Software Development Kit (SDK) that adds automotive-specific functionality and contextualizes the GM Commercial Software experience inside the vehicle

  • Work closely with cross-functional partners like Engineering, Design, Partnerships, Sales, and other Product Management teams to identify, develop and ship products to market

  • Scope detailed, well thought-through requirements and work closely with Design, Engineering to deliver products to market using agile methodologies

  • Define, identify, collect, and track appropriate product or business metrics

  • Connect technical and business worlds to guide products from conception to launch

  • Create buy-in for the product vision both internally and with key partners

  • Stay current and report on industry trends, including new opportunities, competitor capabilities, etc.

  • Drive product launches including working with Marketing, Go-To-Market, Sales teams

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree, MBA or relevant technical advanced degree a plus

  • 7+ years of experience in a product management role, with 5 years of experience building and shipping technical products

  • You have experience launching multiple automotive or embedded technical products from 0 to 1

  • You are developer centric, and thrive establishing close relationships with developers and becoming their go to thought partner

  • You are intellectually curious and excited to tackle technical depth - you like system design thinking, are not afraid to get your hands dirty testing internal developer tools and can effectively collaborate with senior technical leaders across the organization

  • You have a sharp sense of translating customer needs into product solutions that create value and drive business outcomes, and use data to validate impact made

  • You are a pacesetter - you understand the scale of the opportunity ahead of you and move with urgency to deliver meaningful impact to our customers, leading the rest of the team to follow your velocity

  • You are entrepreneurial and do whatever it takes to make your team successful, escalating and find means to unblock the team to keep velocity up

  • You are a strong collaborator and have strong written, verbal and visual communication skills to communicate effectively to different audiences across and outside the organization

  • You get excited about ambiguity and can reliably structure that ambiguity to drive clarity for your team

  • You have experience working with external stakeholders (customers, partners)

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience in developing products for automotive infotainment and connected vehicles

  • Experience as a Software Engineer with direct and hands on experience writing code and working on SDK driven products

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.

  • The salary range for this role is $184,300 to $282,400. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
