Staff Product Manager, Firmware Updates
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to a GM Facility in Warren (MI), Milford (MI), or Austin (TX) three times per week, at minimum.
The Role
As a Staff Product Manager at General Motors, you will be responsible for leading and defining the overall product strategy and execution of firmware updates & programming platform delivery tools across dealerships and manufacturing. The will including having oversight of processes, technology, security, compliance, and other critical aspects of the product area, including close collaboration with Over-the-Air (OTA) software delivery.
You will play a critical role in shaping the strategy and development of firmware update mechanisms that ensure our vehicles operate at their highest efficiency and with the latest features.

What You’ll Do
Vision & Strategy: Define and drive the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for the firmware updates platform, ensuring alignment with GM’s broader business goals and customer needs.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Lead and collaborate with a diverse set of stakeholders, including engineering, manufacturing, software development, program management, and dealership teams, to identify customer value propositions and ensure alignment on product goals and priorities.
Product Development: Oversee the entire product lifecycle from concept through launch and continuous improvement, developing and managing product requirements, user stories, and functional specifications.
Cross-Functional Coordination: Work closely with UX/UI designers to create intuitive and compelling user interfaces, and with cross-functional teams to ensure successful product rollouts, including the development of effective training and support materials.
Market & Competitive Analysis: Conduct market research and competitive analysis to identify opportunities and threats, ensuring that the platform is positioned effectively in the marketplace.
Mentorship & Leadership: Provide mentorship and guidance to junior product team members, fostering a culture of excellence, continuous learning, and innovation.
Metrics & Performance: Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) and objectives and key results (OKRs) to measure product success, inform future decisions, and drive continuous improvement based on user feedback and market trends.
Communication & Reporting: Communicate product updates, progress, and plans to stakeholders across the organization, including executives, customers, and partners - ensuring clarity and transparency.
Compliance & Standards: Ensure that the platform meets industry standards and regulatory requirements related to vehicle firmware, maintaining GM's commitment to quality and safety.
Additional Job Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar technical field
Minimum of 7 years of relevant product management experience, specifically with a focus on updating firmware platforms
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working with diverse teams and driving consensus to deliver exceptional products that meet customer needs
Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex product initiatives across engineering, design, sales, finance and/or marketing
Must be a strategic thinker with a data-driven approach to decision making and problem solving.
Demonstrated ability to figure out solutions to hard problems with many constraints, using sound judgement to assess risks, and to lay out your argument in a well-structured, data- informed, written narrative.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Master’s Degree
Strong technical acumen with a deep understanding of firmware or software development processes and challenges in the automotive sector (highly preferred)
Experience with products that are used in automotive dealerships and/or manufacturing facilities
A company vehicle will be provided for this role with successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Report review.
