Work Arrangement:
Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC on a full-time basis.
The Team:
We are seeking Motorsport Engineering interns to do complex analytical work that would positively contribute to the bottom line of our culture and our company. You would have the opportunity to support the simulation, aerodynamics, CAD, performance, and software engineering GM Motorsports Teams. Work involves leadership ability, critical thinking, and communication skills. Interns will exercise independent determinations with mentorship from supervisors.
We are seeking a Tire Testing Engineer Intern to support GM Motorsports Tire Modeling by providing robust data sets to the Tire Modeling group to enable developing and integrating tire models with simulation (real-time and off-line). The Tire Testing Engineer Intern will gain experience in data acquisition and testing methodologies for tire flat track, vehicle track testing, wheel force transducer testing, lab based tire testing, K&C test rig test operation, race events, and other applicable data to improve tire performance. The Tire Modeling Testing Engineer intern will be a part of a small team of engineers to support the collection of information from sources inside and outside GM, characterize tire models and interpret results for GM Motorsports.
What You’ll Do:
- Carry out methods to process, review, and qualify tire test data; F&M Flat Trac and Wheel Force Transducer (WFT) for tire modeling
- Coordinate with Tire Modeling R&D and Team Support Engineers to develop extensive enhancements to advance tire models, tools, and methods
- Enable tire technology transfer
Required Qualifications:
- Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Must be graduating between December 2025 and June 2028
- MATLAB or Python coding for modeling and analysis
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a team, as well as work independently
- Strong organization skills, forward thinking mentality, and a superb attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, with exceptional work ethic and integrity
Additional Job Description
What will give you a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Strong interest in controls engineering, dynamic systems, optimization, data analytics and performance vehicle strategy
- Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
- Knowledge of tire model fitting routines from Flat-Trac and WFT data
- Motorsports experience
- Familiarity with vehicle testing methods and data reduction from on-track testing, SPMM, and 7-post
Start dates for this internship role are May & June of 2025.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $4000-6100 monthly, dependent upon class status and degree.
GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2025 Student Program.
