Job Description

Onsite - This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant on a full-time basis.

This is an opportunity for you to join a team that proudly manufactures the V8 engine, and Dual Clutch 8-Speed Transmission. Once our products are ready for distribution, they are shipped to 4 different GM assembly plants. A new product retool is occurring at the plant to build an electric drive unit.

The GM St. Catharines Propulsion Plant is GM Canada’s first use of renewable energy with the Landfill Gas Co-Generation Plant and a great example of GM’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions from our operations. It also has been a landfill free facility since 2008 and is certified with Wildlife Habitat Council Gold Program.

As an Environmental Leader supporting the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant, you will have the opportunity to lead the air compliance and regulatory reporting program; PCB Management and the certified ISO 14001 environmental management system while being responsible for developing programs to reduce environmental risk and improve operational efficiency.

The Team: The Environmental Operations Team consists of highly trained environmental professionals who serve as a first line resource for our manufacturing business partners. We are proficient at implementing robust environmental and sustainability practices into daily business decisions and operations to comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations while fostering community connection. We work collaboratively in the Sustainable Workplaces team with our service suppliers, community partners, regulatory agencies, environmental consultants, and legal counsel staff.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Demonstrate a culture of inclusion by actively listening, embracing change and educating others to work effectively together while providing environmental training and coaching. (Be Bold)

  • Grow to understand the plant manufacturing systems including production processes, wastewater discharges, storm water management, air emissions impacts, sewer systems, chemical usage, and waste management/recycling programs, to ensure effective decision-making and regulatory compliance.   • Interface with business partners and regulatory agencies to prepare required regulatory documentation and reports, schedule and perform compliance testing. (It’s on Me)

Additional Job Description

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in engineering or related environmental sciences; P. Eng preferred

  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in environmental engineering or related science, preferably at a manufacturing operation.

  • Experience with Energy REA, PTTW and Air & Storm water ECA permitting requirements.

  • Understanding of manufacturing operations, preferably at more than one location.

  • Demonstrated understanding of provincial, federal and municipal environmental regulations and the ability to interpret how those regulations apply to site operations and activities.

  • Expertise to investigate complex environmental problems and apply sound technical judgment to develop possible solutions (e.g., complicated air regulatory reporting issue, significant waste issue, significant water permitting or compliance issue).

  • Work well both independently and on teams.

  • Highly developed oral and written communications skills.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

  • The ability to develop and lead teams.

  • Experience with analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex data or situations so that others, including senior leadership, can comprehend, respond and contribute.

  • Experience working externally with regulators or other public or private sector individuals.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage smaller projects and assignments with high level of autonomy and accountability for results.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated understanding of GM environmental requirements and how those requirements supplement environmental regulations and apply to site operations and activities.

  • Working knowledge of Global Manufacturing System (GMS) principles and ability to integrate environmental requirements into the GMS framework at the site.
