Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Orion, MI on a full-time basis.
The Role:
As a Launch Material Industrial Engineer, you’ll eliminate waste of time, money, materials, and manpower by implementing lean manufacturing systems across Body, Paint, and GA. You’ll work directly with production, engineering, and core teams to analyze throughput data, prepare standardized work for new products, support in-plant tryouts, and drive continuous improvement during steady state.
What You'll Do:
• Coordinate problem-solving activities on the plant floor with multi-department resources
• Support in-plant tryouts, process changes, and ergonomic improvements
• Establish operational methods and work standards using time-study and work-measurement techniques
• Analyze throughput data to identify bottlenecks and implement countermeasures
• Propose cost-justified improvements to existing operations, optimizing space, materials, personnel, and equipment
• Assist in planning new facilities or relocations
• Provide manufacturing metrics and data to management systems
• Engage regularly with internal and external stakeholders to understand needs and perceptions
• Monitor and enforce safety procedures and housekeeping standards
• Recommend workstation, labor, and layout changes to reduce waste and cost per vehicle
• Partner with core, manufacturing engineering, and engineering teams to set up lean workstations and standardized work
• Develop and execute project plans for launch-related engineering initiatives
• Liaise between plant IE teams and launch personnel during Warren-based meetings, reviews, and builds
• Respond to supplier and engineering inquiries and assist in training launch-follow-up team members
• Support floor readiness activities for start-of-regular-production (SORP) and complete special projects as assigned
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications:
• 5+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment or equivalent
• 2–3 years’ experience as an Industrial Engineer in an automotive or high-volume manufacturing environment or equivalent
• Deep knowledge of GM’s Global Manufacturing System (GMS), Standard Time Data Systems (STDS), and Assembly Processing Systems (APS)
• Proven project-management skills and high analytical ability
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills with cross-functional collaboration experience
• Familiarity with throughput analysis, line balancing, and MGO part routings
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering software for data analysis
Preferred Qualifications:
• Degree in Industrial Engineering or equivalent experience
• Direct‐labor IE experience within GM or comparable OEM launch environments
• Coaching experience in throughput analysis, work measurement, and GMS practices
• Knowledge of basic vehicle assembly and stamping technologies
• Prior exposure to the global launch process and launch-specific IE deliverables
• Demonstrated ability to train and mentor follow-up launch teams
