We have an opportunity available for a Tailings Engineer – Laboratory Testing Specialist to join our team in North Fremantle working in the REELab testing facility with Dr. David Reid. Along with laboratory testing, tailings engineering consultancy activities based at Red Earth Engineering’s Perth office are included within the role.

  • Mine site civil infrastructure design
  • Mine closure planning and design

  • Geotechnical investigations, assessments and analysis to support the above.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As a Tailings Engineer – Laboratory Testing Specialist, this role will require the carrying out the tasks listed below. As the skills required to carry out the laboratory-related tasks are specialised, it is envisaged that the role will initially involve a significant training component. Therefore, while direct experience with the laboratory testing of tailings are not required for the role, a keen interest and desire to learn along with a good soil mechanics background are required.

Some of the key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing tailings laboratory element tests
  • Interpreting tailings laboratory tests to infer mechanical behaviour of the tailings
  • Preparing laboratory testing factual and interpretive reports
  • Following strict QA/QC protocols to ensure accuracy and reliability of results
  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient working environment
  • Working closely with site-based teams and supervisors to deliver timely results
  • Carrying out tailings consulting activities such as slope stability analyses, geotechnical investigations, etc. when not carrying out tailings laboratory testing-related activities

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or a related field. (required)
  • Advanced degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or a related field. (desirable)
  • Professional registration (desirable)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of directly relevant experience in a tailings engineering role
  • Previous experience in a laboratory environment (mining, minerals, or environmental labs) would be useful but is not required
  • A strong focus on safety and attention to detail
  • A strong base in soil mechanics principles
  • Experience handling equipment and samples
  • Australian work rights required for this position
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and traveling to client facilities as needed
  • Field work and overnight travel may be required as part of the tailings consultancy role
  • Moderate fitness level required to handle equipment and samples – ability to lift 20kg etc may be required
  • Valid Australian manual driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel
