Minimum qualifications:

- Experience with numerical components or technical work related to numerical modeling.
- Experience with software engineering, including version control and testing.
- Experience with quantum mechanics and quantum information.
- One or more scientific publication submission(s) for conferences, journals, or public repositories.
Preferred qualifications:
- 2 years of coding experience in Python or C++.
- 1 year of experience owning and initiating research agendas.
- Experience in high performance scientific computing, cloud computing.
- Experience in quantum error correction, including in clifford simulators.
- Experience with simulations of open quantum systems.
About the job
The Google Quantum AI modeling team is developing theoretical and numerical models to support the design, calibration, and operation of our superconducting qubit-based processors. These models are essential as they provide an understanding of the physical phenomena that occur in our devices. Our work lies at the intersection of physical insight, metrology, and engineering, and is necessary for the success of Google Quantum AI's mission to build a useful, error-corrected quantum computer.
As a Research Scientist in Quantum Error Correction and Simulations, you will extend our capabilities to accurately model our future devices at the largest scales, help us understand the expected performance of our error corrected devices. You will be informing future device designs and hardware goals. You will improve our capability to predict the performance of large error correction experiments.
In this role, you'll also actively contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings, with ideas inspired by internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world.
The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $136,000-$200,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Work with experimentalists to simulate and explain existing error-correction experiments.
- Develop error budgets of how physical errors contribute to logical error rates.
- Integrate new error mechanisms into simulation infrastructure to explain current and future device performance.
- Support development of new classical simulators (e.g., going beyond Pauli twirling to include coherent effects).
- Develop and improve software interfaces between the simulations codebase and other codebases used by hardware and other teams to run end-to-end device simulations incorporating comprehensive error models. Optimize device design, evaluate error mitigation techniques and error correction protocols, and inform component-level performance goals for future Quantum AI milestones.
