Senior Director, Engineering, GCE, Core Virtualization, AI/ML

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
• 15 years of experience in software engineering leadership
• Experience in enterprise cloud computing, distributed systems, virtualization, networking, storage, and security.

Preferred qualifications:

• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related field
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform or other major cloud provider
• Experience developing and operating large-scale infrastructure systems
• Experience effectively managing customer escalations and driving resolutions to complex technical issues

The Core Virtualization team is the engine driving GCE's performance, security, and innovation. As the Director of Engineering for GCE Core Virtualization, you will lead the teams responsible for the core hypervisor, memory management, live update capabilities, virtualization security, and the burgeoning ARM-based compute business.

In this role, you will shape the future of GCE's virtualization stack, ensuring it remains performant, scalable, and secure public cloud offering. You will manage complex technical challenges in low-level systems, drive strategic architectural evolution, enhance security posture against sophisticated threats, and deliver features that minimize disruption for our customers. You will lead a highly specialized team, drive significant technical impact across Google Cloud, and contribute directly to the success of Google's core infrastructure and strategic initiatives like ARM.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

• Provide direct technical leadership and guidance to a team of engineers, driving the development and execution of GCE's technical roadmap.
• Own and enhance the security posture of the GCE Virtualization stack. Drive strategic security investments, oversee mitigation efforts for vulnerabilities and emerging threats, and collaborate with security teams across Google.
• Lead the virtualization stack to deliver industry-leading performance, scalability, and reliability, meeting the stringent demands of workloads including large-scale AI/ML and mission-critical enterprise applications.
• Oversee the engineering execution for the ARM instance portfolio, and collaborate with Product Management and customers to drive adoption and business growth.
• Ensure the smooth operation of the virtualization stack, manage customer escalations related to virtualization or security, and drive continuous improvement in operational excellence and quality.
