Job Overview
Jensen Hughes, a leading consulting firm specializing in risk analysis and engineering solutions, is actively seeking a Senior Nuclear Fire Consultant with extensive experience in nuclear fire safety design, assessment, and probabilistic safety analysis (Fire PSA), and deterministic fire risk assessment. The successful candidate will be a suitably qualified and experienced person in nuclear fire engineering, capable of providing expert input across a range of UK nuclear facilities. This role is ideal for professionals seeking to shape fire safety strategy and support high-impact nuclear projects.
This position will primarily support nuclear fire protection studies in the UK and abroad. The project team is based in the UK, and we are open to remote work arrangements for exceptional candidates within the UK. The successful candidate must be eligible for and maintain UK Security Clearance (SC). Our diverse team serves clients globally, providing specialized consulting services ranging from routine nuclear power plant operations to cutting-edge research and development initiatives aimed at enhancing plant safety and efficiency.
The successful candidate will also be expected to train and mentor junior staff involved in nuclear fire safety work and serve as a key point of contact for technical guidance and support in this area.
Beyond technical responsibilities, your role may include project management, which includes developing proposals, allocating resources efficiently, and maintaining clear communication with clients throughout the project lifecycle.
In addition, business development will be a significant part of this role, with a strong focus on building and maintaining client relationships across the UK.
Responsibilities
Your role will involve a variety of responsibilities tailored to your expertise and interests, including but not limited to:
- Lead and deliver fire hazard assessments (FHA), fire safety strategies, and fire PSA in compliance with UK regulatory frameworks.
- Support the development of fire protection design systems, including active and passive fire barriers, fire detection, and suppression systems.
- Contribute to and review safety cases, risk assessments, and design justifications related to fire safety.
- Provide fire safety input into multi-disciplinary design teams across new build, decommissioning, and operational nuclear projects.
- Interface with regulators and client safety committees, supporting technical discussions and reviews.
- Mentor junior consultants and support personnel development within the fire safety discipline.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of nuclear fire regulations, British Standards, IAEA guidelines, and ONR guidance (e.g., NS-TAST-GD-024).
- Participate in business development by identifying opportunities, supporting bids, and presenting technical capabilities to clients.
Requirements and Qualifications
Required:
- Extensive credible experience in nuclear fire engineering in the UK context.
- Proven delivery of Fire Hazard Analyses, fire PSA, and fire safety case contributions for UK nuclear licensees.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional recognition (e.g., MIFireE, IMechE, IET).
- Degree in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Full eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC):
Preferred:
- Prior experience supporting GDA, new reactor design licensing, or high-hazard facility projects.
- Familiarity with ONR Safety Assessment Principles (SAPs) and Technical Assessment Guides (TAGs).
- Experience with software tools such as CFAST, FDS, or risk assessment platforms.
- Previous engagement with EDF, Sellafield Ltd, Magnox, or international nuclear operators.
Conditions of Employment:
- Employment is conditional on the ability to obtain and maintain UK Government Security Clearance (SC level or above).
