As the Executive Director, Japan Asset Management Compliance, Conduct & Operational Risk Lead, you will oversee and implement the CCOR program for our Asset Management business in Japan. You will lead a team dedicated to ensuring compliance and operational excellence across a diverse portfolio of asset management products, including mutual funds, ETFs, and discretionary management services. You will collaborate with teams managing various investment strategies—such as equity, fixed income, and alternative asset classes—and serve as the primary contact for Japanese regulatory bodies.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead a high-performing team conducting independent second line oversight over Japan business activities, including retail and institutional sales, mutual funds (including ETFs), and investment management across multiple asset classes
  • Act as the primary contact for regulatory engagement with the Japan Financial Services Agency (JFSA), Japan Investment Advisers Association (JIAA), and other relevant regulatory bodies for day-to-day matters and onsite inspections
  • Represent JPMorgan Asset Management in industry associations such as the Japan Investment Trust Association and ASIFMA
  • Partner closely with business personnel to ensure timely implementation of regulatory changes, including those impacting US Registered Investment Advisers
  • Assess compliance and operational risks for new products and business initiatives through the New Business Initiatives Approval process
  • Engage with regional and global CCOR counterparts to provide oversight over cross-border activities and investment delegation
  • Provide oversight of onshore client advisors’ coverage of intermediaries and institutional clients in Japan
  • Implement the firm’s operational risk management framework to independently assess operational risks and control environments, including periodic legal entity assessments and deep dive reviews
  • Drive the CCOR monitoring program and collaborate with the first line of defence centralized Testing team to define quarterly testing plans and approaches, and liaise with key business stakeholders on monitoring and testing results

Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in a compliance, control, or audit role within an asset management business
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant Japanese laws and regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including effective interaction with senior management
  • Strong influencing and stakeholder management skills with the ability to drive change
  • Solid command of written and spoken English and Japanese
  • Experience in managing or leading teams, or demonstrated ability in leadership roles
  • Experience engaging with Japanese regulatory authorities and industry associations
