Principal Integration Architect - MuleSoft & Agentic AI (Director)
KPMG
Job Description
We are seeking a Principal Integration Architect to lead the enterprise integration strategy and delivery using MuleSoft Anypoint Platform, while advancing next-generation Agentic AI capabilities across integration, automation, and operational excellence. In this role, you will define target architectures, guide complex integration programs, mentor engineering teams, and drive adoption of modern patterns such as API-led connectivity, event-driven architecture, domain-aligned integration, and AI-assisted integration operations.
You will be the go-to authority for enterprise integration, API governance, platform enablement, and secure AI agent design—ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient, compliant, and measurably valuable.
Key Responsibilities
1) Enterprise Integration & API Architecture
Define and own enterprise integration reference architecture across MuleSoft, cloud, SaaS, and on-prem systems.
Lead API-led connectivity design: System APIs, Process APIs, Experience APIs, including reuse strategy and versioning.
Establish standards for API design, contract-first development (RAML/OAS), error handling, idempotency, caching, throttling, and performance.
Drive integration patterns including sync/async, batch, pub/sub, sagas, and event choreography.
2) MuleSoft Platform Leadership
Serve as principal architect for MuleSoft: CloudHub / Runtime Fabric, API Manager, Exchange, Anypoint Monitoring, Flex Gateway (as applicable).
Guide platform hardening: network topology, VPC/VNet, connectivity (VPN/Direct Connect/ExpressRoute), secrets management, and environment strategy.
Establish CI/CD and quality gates: automated testing, static analysis, security scans, release governance, and rollout/rollback patterns.
Optimize runtime performance and stability: thread pools, memory, back-pressure strategies, and scaling models.
3) Agentic AI for Integration (Design + Governance)
Design and govern agentic workflows that interact with integration services safely (e.g., “AI agents” that initiate workflows, triage incidents, propose mappings, generate tests, or automate routine platform ops).
Define patterns for:
Tool-using agents (agents that call approved APIs/connectors)
Human-in-the-loop approvals for high-risk actions
Guardrails: policy checks, prompt hardening, rate limiting, and controlled tool access
Auditability: logging, traceability, and deterministic replays where required
Partner with security and risk stakeholders to ensure responsible AI controls (data handling, access control, privacy, compliance).
4) Security, Governance & Compliance
Enforce enterprise standards for API security (OAuth2/OIDC, mTLS, JWT validation, threat protection, schema validation).
Define governance: API lifecycle, naming conventions, documentation standards, SLAs/SLOs, and deprecation policies.
Implement and oversee observability (distributed tracing, metrics, logs), incident response playbooks, and platform runbooks.
5) Delivery Leadership & Stakeholder Management
Lead architecture for complex programs across multiple domains and delivery teams.
Run architecture reviews, ensure alignment to target state, and manage technical risk and trade-offs.
Mentor architects and engineers; uplift capability through enablement, templates, accelerators, and best practices.
Work with product owners, business stakeholders, and engineering leaders to translate business outcomes into technical roadmaps.
Required Qualifications & Experience
15+ years in enterprise integration / API architecture, with 5+ years designing and delivering with MuleSoft.
Proven experience leading large-scale integration programs across cloud and hybrid environments.
Strong hands-on knowledge of MuleSoft capabilities: design, development, deployment, governance, and operations.
Deep understanding of integration architecture patterns, including event-driven and microservices integration.
Experience establishing platform governance: API standards, SDLC, CI/CD, quality, and operational readiness.
