The position is for a System Engineer - Mechanical in the Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG), based in Morrisville, North Carolina. The ideal candidate will have a server development background with mechanical design and validation experiences.
This is an exciting role in Cloud Service Provider Group (CSP) that has a strong focus to be the #1 infrastructure provider for cloud datacenters that providing computing, storage, and GPU services to cloud customers. The system engineer will be an integral member of a team responsible for developing, testing innovative and complex GPU servers with liquid cooling. These organic designs provide exposure to the latest technologies from Lenovo, its development partners, and customers. Our CSP solutions are conceptualized, developed, and deployed worldwide, all within our in-house expertise.
Location: This position is based in Morrisville, NC.
What You'll Do
- Develop, qualify Racks/Server infrastructure in cloud data center, includes compute server, storage server, GPU server.
- Develop mechanical designs for server components, including chassis, enclosures, cooling solutions, and other structural elements.
- Collaborate with the engineering team to design and develop server hardware, including server motherboards and hardware components, DIMMs, NICs, FPGA, Storage, chassis, air/liquid cooling systems, and power supplies.
- Design and implement efficient cooling systems, including heat sinks, fans, and liquid cooling to ensure optimal thermal performance under heavy loads.
- Build and test prototypes, refine designs based on test results, and troubleshoot issues related to mechanical performance, thermals, and noise.
- Collaborate with electrical engineers, hardware engineers, and industrial designers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical components into the overall server system.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 7+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably within the server, data center, or electronics industry
- Strong experience with Creo CAD software for designing and modeling mechanical components
- Experience with air and liquid cooling systems, heat sinks, and fans for electronics or high-performance computing systems
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, die casting, plastic injection molding, and machining
Preferred Qualifications (We have multiple openings based on your preferred qualification areas and expertise depth.)
- Experience in server or data center hardware design.
- Experience using the PTC Creo CAD tool and PTC Windchill for CAD data file management.
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance standards for server hardware (e.g., UL, FCC, CE).
- Experience working with cloud infrastructure or high-density server environments.
- Knowledge of material science as it applies to electronics cooling and server chassis design.
- Strong communication skills for negotiating design details that support the product delivery team’s objectives.
