Job Responsibilities (Essential functions and duties):

• Manage and support a global patent portfolio for Lenovo’s PC businesses, with primary responsibility for inventions originating from Japan-based R&D groups.
• Conduct invention mining activities with inventors and support high-quality patent filings aligned with business priorities.
• Manage outside counsel and review outside counsel work products across patent preparation and prosecution.
• Review office actions and support prosecution strategy, including routine matters and higher-priority cases requiring strategic input.
• Review patent specifications and claims to help ensure technical accuracy, claim quality, and alignment with filing strategy.
• Support first filing, secondary filing, continuation, divisional, and other prosecution-related decisions based on portfolio value, business relevance, and jurisdictional considerations.
• Support portfolio analysis and, as needed, assist with due diligence, infringement analysis, invalidity analysis, claim charting, and related work for licensing, litigation, and business transaction matters.
• Support IP matters for domestic joint venture businesses, coordinating with Japan-based stakeholders, overseas IP team members, and outside counsel as needed.
• Support inventor education, IP awareness activities, and other business IP-related initiatives.
• For highly experienced candidates, take greater ownership of complex portfolio management matters, provide practical patent-related counseling, and independently manage higher-complexity matters with limited supervision.

Job Requirements – Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

• Experience in patent portfolio management, including invention harvesting, filing, prosecution, portfolio maintenance, and secondary filing decisions in support of business priorities.
• Understanding of patent law, filing practices, and prosecution strategies in at least one major jurisdiction, including Japan, US, Europe, WIPO/PCT, and China. Familiarity with multiple major jurisdictions is preferred.
• Strong claim drafting, claim interpretation, and claim review skills, with the ability to work hands-on with claim language when needed.
• Technical capability to quickly understand a wide variety of PC-related technologies, including hardware, software, firmware/BIOS, circuit design, and AI technology.
• Strong communication skills to work effectively with inventors, outside counsel, business stakeholders, and internal IP team members across Japan and overseas locations.
• Strong professional integrity and commitment to high ethical standards and sound judgment.
• Experience working with internal and external IP management tools.
• Experience with, or strong openness to, responsibly integrating AI tools into daily work processes, with a willingness to continue developing practical AI expertise together with the team.
• Excellent English and Japanese language skills, both written and verbal.
  
  

Job Requirements – Prior Work Experience

• Relevant patent experience commensurate with role level. Senior-level applicants should have approximately 8+ years of experience, preferably in the IP department of a global technology company or an international patent law firm. Patent Agent or Patent Attorney qualification in a major jurisdiction is welcomed.
  
  

Educational Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in a science or technology field, preferably engineering, physics, electronics, or computer science. A master’s degree in one of these areas is preferred.
