This role sits at the intersection of engineering and law, working directly with in-house counsel, outside litigation counsel, licensing negotiators and our business teams to evaluate patent assertions, analyze claims against Lenovo products and third-party technologies, assess prior art and evaluate Lenovo patents for potential use in litigation and licensing situations. The ideal candidate combines strong technical fluency in relevant engineering disciplines with the analytical rigor needed to support high-stakes patent disputes and licensing negotiations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze patents and patent claims to determine scope, validity considerations, and potential infringement.
  • Conduct technical claim charting, mapping patent claim elements to product features, source code, technical specifications, and industry standards.
  • Research and evaluate prior art references, including patents, technical publications, standards documents, and product literature.
  • Support litigation and licensing teams by preparing technical summaries, infringement/non-infringement analyses, and rebuttal materials for use in discovery, expert reports, and case strategy and matter discussions.
  • Working deeply with Lenovo’s product developers to understand technical operations and trends in technology development
  • Assist licensing teams in evaluating incoming and outgoing licensing proposals, including technical due diligence on patent portfolios and royalty base assessments.
  • Collaborate with outside counsel and technical experts to prepare for depositions, hearings, and trial, including reviewing expert reports and identifying technical strengths and weaknesses in opposing positions.
  • Maintain organized technical records and documentation to support case files, licensing negotiations, and portfolio analyses.
  • Present technical findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders, including attorneys and business leaders.

Key Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in claim analysis, patent prosecution support, technical litigation support, or a related engineering role involving patent matters.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting prior art searches and technical invalidity/validity analyses.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for legal audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously under deadline pressure while maintaining attention to detail.

Preferred:

  • Experience supporting patent litigation (e.g., claim charts, expert report review, discovery support) or patent licensing negotiations.
  • Familiarity with relevant technology standards bodies (e.g., 3GPP, IEEE, ETSI) and standard-essential patent (SEP) issues.
  • Prior experience working within an in-house legal department, law firm IP litigation group, or as a technical consultant/expert supporting patent disputes.
