Who You'll Work With

You will work as part of the firm's global Risk Operations and Experience (ROX) team, which is responsible for designing and delivering integrated technology and change solutions for the Risk function and the firm. You’ll be part of a team that shapes the Risk function’s strategy and approach to important risk mitigation technology, drives integrated change initiatives, and delivers operational risk processes. The ROX team is inviting an Associate Director to join in North America.

Your impact within our firm

In this role, you will work with the Product Risk Operations and Experience team to design, implement, and operationalize integrated processes, guidance, and governance for client-serving and firm-enabling products, including those with Responsible AI requirements.
The goal of your work will be to make it as simple and clear as possible for product teams to understand risk requirements, do risk reviews, and implement controls in products to reduce the risk of mis-development or misuse of products.
As the Associate Director of Product Risk, your role is to lead and mentor a team of risk advisors to ensure timely, accurate, and pragmatic product risk assessments. You will serve as a Risk expert on internal and client-facing products, including advising on issues across technology, usage, regulatory, deployment, and other product-related risks. You will regularly interface with product leaders, practice leaders, and senior leaders on our risk committee to describe, mitigate, and manage escalations related to product development and deployment.
In addition to your job leading higher-risk product advisory work, you will independently lead and execute projects to improve the product risk process and syndicate with key stakeholders needed to move the initiative forward. By developing standard operating procedures, templates, and guidance for risk advisors on your team and across the firm, you will be help ensure the accuracy and quality of all product risk reviews. You will anticipate and address gaps in product risk management for the team and our firm, including improvements to product guidance, technical patterns and risk mitigation strategies.
You will provide guidance, mentorship, and support to ROX team members of all levels of seniority, sharing knowledge and growing skills as well as help to shape the team agenda and advise team members on recommended solutions. You will mentor and apprentice more junior colleagues, providing developmental support and guidance, and driving the year-end evaluation process for direct reports.

Your qualifications and skills

  • University degree and excellent academic record, advanced degree or certifications preferred
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in risk management and product management, technology, or transformation/change management; working knowledge of GenAI, product development lifecycle, or user experience is highly recommended; familiarity with the firm’s culture and how to drive change is a plus
  • Proven track record and expertise developing and successfully executing programs or new capabilities that meet the objectives of excellence in a dynamic environment; experience in creating and driving the strategy and direction for an enterprise-wide program or capability and leading a cross-functional team to implement and operationalize it; experience preparing regular updates for the firm’s governance committees for transparency and direction-setting
  • Demonstrated success and extensive experience in leading Product Risk for technology, including creating policies or standards, defining risks and requirements, assessing risk of products, managing escalations and risk acceptance decisioning, implementing controls to remediate risks, rolling out change management/transformation, and running compliance and consequence management
  • Expertise in product-related risks (i.e., regulations, firm policies, firm standards) and up-to-date knowledge of emerging risks (e.g., GenAI); working knowledge of risk processes at the firm and stakeholder groups
  • Self-motivated and creative thinker, willing to challenge and be challenged to learn; excited by learning new topics and different problem-solving approaches
  • Excellent conceptual and analytical problem solving, communication/presentation, and stakeholder management skills; excellent team collaboration and works well in dynamic environment to quickly adapt to changes in emerging risks and priorities; ability to create structure in face of ambiguity, deadline pressure, and conflicting requests
  • Sensitivity to and discretion in handling confidential information

For new joiners for this role in Canada and/or the United States, including all office locations where the job may be performed, a reasonable estimated range is $213,000 - $284,000 in USD and $211,000 - $282,000 in CAD — to help you understand what you can expect. This reflects our best estimate of the lowest to highest salary for this role at the time of this posting, ensuring you have a clear picture right from the start, though it's important to remember that actual salaries may vary. Factors like your office location, your unique blend of experience and skills, start date and our current organizational needs all play a part in determining the final figure. Certain roles are also eligible for bonuses, subject to McKinsey's discretion and based on factors such as individual and/or organizational performance.
