A Day in the Life

This role is responsible for overseeing and leading Legal Operations programs, projects, and initiatives within the Intellectual Property practice area of the Global Legal function. The primary focus is to ensure that Legal programs and related projects align with the strategic plan and support the achievement of Legal’s goals. Key responsibilities include strategic systems planning, application development or enhancements to systems of record, implementation of process and system changes, continuous improvement efforts, and related budget management.

The Legal Ops Business Process Program Manager is responsible for facilitating alignment across practice leads and support functions, including Legal, Finance, and IT. This involves establishing agreed-upon systems, processes, and deliverables, while ensuring prioritization and alignment across the organization. The ideal candidate will serve as a collaborator, partner, and liaison between IT, Legal Operations services, and the practice areas or functions within Global Legal.

The Legal Ops Business Process Program Manager should be a motivated self-starter with expertise in operations, finance, and project management, complemented by strong technical skills, organizational change management experience, and facilitation abilities. To succeed in this role, the Program Manager must thrive in a matrixed environment, demonstrate leadership and teamwork, communicate effectively, and collaborate deeply across the organization.

This position will report solid line into the Global Legal Operations organization with a dotted line to the Legal Intellectual Property practice area.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Translate practice area goals into operational strategies, tactical plans, and support processes.

  • Lead or collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate, develop, and manage projects for key practice area processes, ensuring successful program execution throughout their lifecycle.

  • Oversee and manage ongoing project operations, acting as a liaison between project management, planning, project teams, and Legal subject matter experts.

  • Monitor project status and budgets, manage schedules, and prepare status reports.

  • Identify and resolve project issues to meet productivity, quality, and operational goals.

  • Develop mechanisms to track project progress and address challenges with project managers, line managers, and clients.

  • Lead strategic planning and oversee the implementation of Legal systems and platforms.

  • Manage day-to-day activities for multiple workstreams, including project planning, resource allocation, status reporting, risk identification, and accountability for deliverables across functional organizations.

  • Collaborate with various stakeholder groups (legal and non-legal) to address strategic priorities effectively.

  • Serve as an escalation point for concerns raised by the business, practice areas, or project teams, resolving issues inclusively and leveraging diverse resources for optimal solutions.

  • Work with finance and project teams to forecast, collect, and report financial data to meet business and reporting requirements.

  • Define change impacts and develop implementation plans.

  • Coordinate with vendors for product evaluations, including demos and materials.

  • Streamline workflows and oversee updates to system configurations.

  • Partner with stakeholders to prioritize projects and ad-hoc requests.

  • Note: This role does not involve direct hiring, firing, or people management responsibilities.

  • Travel Requirement: Less than 10%.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience working with processes and systems within the Legal discipline in a regulated environment, or advanced degree with a minimum of 3 years’ experience

Nice to Have

  • Practical experience in leading and managing processes, projects, programs, and tactics related to Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio management.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Legal, Business, Finance, or IT.

  • Advanced degree or relevant experience in Legal Operations or a specific Legal practice area is preferred.

  • Advanced understanding of finance and accounting concepts, with experience analyzing financial data.

  • Proficiency in process mapping, project management, and Lean or Six Sigma principles, concepts, and practices.

  • Experience working within a matrixed environment and managing by influence.

  • Proven ability to build relationships and earn the trust of Legal leaders, attorneys, and support staff.

  • Skilled in achieving goals through others and providing direction, coaching, and guidance to project teams.

  • Results-oriented, with the ability to proactively identify and resolve issues in a creative and collaborative manner.

  • Committed to seeking opportunities to enhance stakeholder satisfaction and strengthen relationships.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver executive-level updates effectively.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$115,200.00 - $172,800.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
