Within our Automation Engineering group in Medtronic, plc, we focus on the transformation of our manufacturing processes through the implementation of best-in-class automated equipment. Our Principal Automation Engineers lead the development of highly complex automated equipment for use in the manufacture of medical devices and also influence automation projects globally by defining automation standards and contributing to our Automation Community of Practice and Automation Center of Excellence.

A day in the life of:

• As a Principal Automation Engineer, you will actively lead and/or participate in all areas of new equipment development including the following: Initial Feasibility, Proof of Concept, Proof of Principle, Procurement, Mechanical/Electrical/Pneumatic/Software Design, Technology development & advancement, Vendor management & Project management.
• Develop and apply CAD modelling, 3D printing, augmented reality, simulated capacity planning and other computer aided design (CAD) software engineering methods, theories and research techniques in the investigation and solution of technical problems to develop best in class equipment for the manufacture of our medical device product ranges.
• Lead & support teams driving technology process innovation with emphasis on improving quality, reducing cost, improving reliability, and developing state of the art automated and semi-automated systems.
• You will use your skills to assess architecture and hardware limitations in the preparation of design specifications, analysis, and recommendations in the planning of technical projects.
• Collaborate with cross-functional & cross site teams to define, execute, and deliver on new equipment development requirements.
• Support process development, characterisation, and validation activities to support new equipment introduction.
• You will specify materials, equipment and supplies required for completion of projects and may evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.
• Participate in our Automation Community of Practice to share best practice and create new knowledge to advance the automation community in Medtronic.
• Support the development of Automation standards in Medtronic globally.

Key Skills & Experience

• Qualified person to degree Level 8 in Engineering/Science or a related discipline.
• Minimum 7 years of relevant experience or advanced degree with a minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
• Expert knowledge of PLC’s with extensive programming and diagnosis experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Proven track record of leading the full life cycle of introducing automated equipment from concept generation to commissioning & debug, with experience in feasibility and design stages.
• Knowledge and experience specifying and validating vision systems: detection, measurement, OCR, OCV.
• Proven experience working with several multi-national automation vendors and best in class automated process technology.
• The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in a role that involves expertise in various fields and disciplines, such as technical knowledge and training, as well as effectively sharing information and communicating with team members and management.
• The candidate should be able to adapt to different roles and work effectively in different areas of the business.
• Proven ability to work effectively and proactively on cross-functional and cross-site teams, as well as leading and mentoring teams.
• Experienced project manager with a proven track record in delivering innovative equipment designs on time and on budget, preferably with a PM qualification.
• A strong problem solver who can translate complexity into simplicity and articulate crisply and clearly.
• Creates and communicates clear strategy/plans, with a demonstrated ability to make sound judgments.
• Passionate about understanding the workings of complex systems and processes and bringing this passion to work.
• Excellent communicator with fluency in English, both in writing and speaking.
