Our R&D site in Munich has been active in the field of medical technology since 2013 and has been part of the Medtronic Surgical Robotics Group since 2016. We strive to enable earlier diagnosis, better treatment, faster complication-free recovery, and enhanced patient outcomes through less invasive surgical solutions.
With our approx. 80 employees at the Munich R&D site as part of the Robotic Surgical Technologies R&D Center of Excellence and our colleagues in the US, we set the standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery and beyond by creating innovative surgical products and services that focus on obesity, diseases, and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, abdominal wall, pelvic region, and head and neck.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
- You design and develop Software for computing nodes embedded into a robotic system and related surgical instrumentation.
- You work with an international team of Software engineers to deliver critical software for a distributed real-time environment. Together with this team you
- connect sensors and actuators to higher level control algorithms,
- apply hardware abstraction concepts,
- implement safety related functionality,
- develop communication protocols,
- work with real-time operating systems and bare metal applications,
- create software that runs on a variety of computing architecture ranging from microcontrollers, over powerful Arm-based SoCs, to multicore x86/x64 computers.
- You integrate and test new designs on a robotic platform.
- You develop medical device compliant software to control mechatronic systems.
- You participate in an Agile development process with a cross functional collaboration of various teams.
- You review the work of other developers to help maintain our high-quality standards.
- You define and review software requirements and architecture.
- You document the software including design detail, implementation documentation, unit tests, and bug tracking.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- Master's Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent and at least 5 years of relevant work experience
- You gained experience in Research Centers, Universities, Automation, Robotics, or in a regulated industry environment
- You are a great communicator (verbal and written) and can explain complex ideas/topics in an easy and effective way.
- You show great self-motivation and can work autonomously.
- You embrace agile development practices (like Test Driven Development, iterative/incremental delivery, tight feedback loops, collaboration).
- You have a design pattern at hand for any programming task.
- You understand the constraints of writing Software that interfaces with the physical world.
- You are aware of the implications of developing software that serves closed-loop control algorithms as connection to the hardware.
- You can explain communication technologies like Ethernet, EtherCAT, SPI, I2C, UART, USB.
- You know the differences between FPGAs, DSPs, CPUs, etc.
- You have a solid understanding and appreciation of Software Development Cycle (SDLC),
- You understand standard OS features (e.g. threading and concurrency, memory management, device drivers, I/O, etc.).
- You are comfortable in using programming languages, tools, and technologies like:
- Modern C++ ( 17)

- Python,
- Shell Scripting,
- git,
- GTest/GMock,
- CMake, Basel
- Linux/QNX/Windows,
- Atlassian Tools (Bitbucket, Jira, Bamboo, Crucible),
- You like to join a culturally diverse team and can work in English language.
