A Day in the Life

In this role, you will drive the strategic development of scalable AI and MLOps platforms for defect inspection and visual process monitoring across Medtronic’s diverse product portfolio. You will convert proof-of-concepts into production-grade solutions, ensuring global scalability, reliability, and compliance in regulated manufacturing environments.

  • Define and execute the strategic roadmap for Analytics for Manufacturing Imaging, including data ingestion, annotation governance, model training, deployment, and lifecycle management.

  • Architect end-to-end workflows in AWS SageMaker, NVIDIA TAO Toolkit, PyTorch, and other custom training pipelines, ensuring reproducibility, scalability, and regulatory compliance.

  • Develop advanced computer vision solutions, including segmentation, anomaly detection, and transformer-based vision models, while integrating hybrid approaches using Halcon and OpenCV

  • Prototype and adapt foundation models (e.g., DINOv2, SAM 2.1) using transfer learning and self-supervised methods, translating research into validated, domain-specific solutions for manufacturing.

  • Lead initiatives to operationalize DataOps automation and model-assisted annotation to accelerate high-quality ground-truth creation.

  • Plan and direct AI/ML model from experimentation to deployment, ensuring performance benchmarking, validation, and compliance with medical device quality standards.

  • Build compelling business cases supported by ROI analysis and projected operational benefits to prioritize enterprise AI/ML initiatives.

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Manufacturing Imaging & Analytics Center of Excellence, setting best practices and enabling adoption of AI/ML solutions at global manufacturing sites.

  • Partner with Manufacturing, Automation, Process, Quality, and IT to ensure seamless integration of AI/ML models and algorithms into production systems.

  • Engage with external vendors, integrators, and suppliers to align internal platform development with cutting-edge AI/ML and industrial technologies.

  • Champion training, knowledge-sharing, and technical playbooks to democratize AI/ML practices and accelerate adoption across the enterprise.

Must Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 7+ years of AI/ML engineering experience, including computer vision and MLOps, OR advanced degree with 5+ years of experience.

Nice to Have

  • The ability and self-motivation to take a strategy and vision, define and manage project deliverables, and deliver scalable project outcomes

  • Proven track record of designing and deploying production-grade AI/ML solutions in manufacturing environments.

  • Expertise in AWS SageMaker, PyTorch, and MLOps toolchains (ClearML, GitLab CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes/EKS, Helm, Triton Inference Server).

  • Strong Expertise in computer vision algorithm development, leveraging both deep learning and hybrid rules-based approaches (Halcon, OpenCV).

  • Proficiency with data curation and annotation platforms (Voxel51, V7) for large-scale model training.

  • Excellent communication and knowledge-sharing skills, with experience building Centers of Excellence, technical standards, and training frameworks.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and internal customers, from manufacturing process to quality and automation engineers

  • Knowledge of advanced imaging for manufacturing.

  • Experience scaling Industry 4.0/IoT cloud-to-edge AI architectures.

  • Experience in validation and performance analysis (MSA, IQ/OQ/PQ, TMV) ensuring regulatory compliance and reliability.

  • Publications or patents in AI/ML computer vision or manufacturing analytics.

  • Experience with transfer learning and training domain-specific models using self-supervised learning and foundation model adaptation.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$160,800.00 - $241,200.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
