A Day in the Life

This position applies extensive technical expertise towards electronics hardware design to provide solutions to complex technical problems and provides solutions that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Work is performed without direction and with considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.

The Sr. Principal Electrical Engineer is responsible for providing strategic and technical leadership in the design, development, and validation of advanced electrical systems for cutting-edge medical devices. This role drives innovation by defining architecture, leading complex circuit design (digital, analog, and mixed signal), and ensuring compliance with stringent regulatory and quality standards. The engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams—including systems, firmware, mechanical, and quality engineering—to deliver reliable, safe, and high-performing solutions that meet clinical needs and improve patient outcomes. Specific tasks include:

  • Provide strategic and technical leadership in the design, development, and verification of advanced electrical systems for innovative medical devices, ensuring on-time delivery within defined cost and quality targets.
  • Leading various initiatives within New Product Development / Sustenance such as design changes, supply chain improvements, analysis and determination of critical component replacement and CAPA support.
  • Define system and circuit architecture and lead complex digital, analog, and mixed-signal design efforts, achieving compliance with global regulatory and safety standards (like IEC 60601, ISO 13485, FDA etc.).
  • Leading the analysis and modeling of identified design solutions to ensure fulfillment of sub-system requirements and system architecture.
  • Drive innovation through technology scouting, prototyping, and design optimization, targeting a 20–30% improvement in performance, power efficiency, or manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (systems, firmware, mechanical, quality, regulatory) to ensure designs meet product requirements, reduce design iterations, and minimize late-stage changes.
  • Mentor and develop engineering talent, creating a pipeline of high-performing engineers and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, design excellence, and knowledge sharing.
  • Support risk management and V&V activities, contributing to hazard analysis, DFMEA, and root cause investigations to ensure robust and reliable designs.
  • Lead user evaluations, technical risk assessments, hazard analysis, and failure investigations to ensure safe and reliable product designs.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for circuit designs, providing guidance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle support for new and existing products.
  • Ensure compliance with Medtronic design procedures, quality systems, and global regulatory requirements.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration, project planning, and milestone execution to deliver on time, within scope, and to quality targets.
  • Champion process improvements, mentor teams, and build organizational capability for sustained technical excellence.
  • Performs duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies or government regulations.

  • Travel requirement: Occasional international and domestic travel may be required for less than 25%.

  • Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks.
  • Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.

Required knowledge and experience:

  • BE/ BTech/ME/MTech in Electronics/Instrumentation or relevant specialization in Engineering
  • 20+ years of Electronics circuit design-based product development
  • Digital & Analog Circuit Design: Delivered high-performance, reliable circuits across medical and embedded applications, optimizing for efficiency, manufacturability, and compliance.
  • Mixed-Signal Interfacing: Integrated analog and digital subsystems (ADC/DAC, sensors, I/O, displays) to ensure accurate signal processing, robust operation, and reduced system errors.
  • Power Supply & Management: Designed efficient, compliant power systems (DC-DC converters, regulators, battery management), improving reliability and reducing energy consumption.
  • Embedded Firmware Mapping & Testing: Mapped firmware to hardware, led verification and validation, achieving high first-pass yields and seamless system integration.
  • Electrical Embedded Product Development: Led end-to-end development from concept through prototyping, testing, and production deployment, accelerating time-to-market and improving manufacturability.
  • Technical Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Directed teams across electrical, systems, firmware, mechanical, quality, and regulatory functions to deliver projects on time, within scope, and to quality standards.
  • Innovation & Problem Solving: Applied creativity and technical expertise to solve complex, undefined challenges, driving breakthrough solutions and enhanced product performance.
  • User Evaluation & Risk Management: Planned and conducted product concept evaluations, analyzed data, assessed technical risks and hazards, and implemented design improvements to ensure safe, effective solutions.
  • Project Management & Process Improvement: Managed project tasks, milestones, resources, and budgets; implemented process improvements, mentorship, and knowledge sharing to build organizational capability.
  • Technology Assessment & Strategic Impact: Evaluated emerging technologies and conducted state-of-the-art reviews, contributing to product roadmaps, IP generation, and competitive advantage.
  • Delivered optimized analog and digital designs with precise component selection, reducing design iterations and cost.
  • Performed detailed design analysis and validation, ensuring >95% first-pass yield and reducing late-stage rework.
  • Led compliance and standards-based testing with automation, accelerating verification cycles and improving quality metrics.
  • Utilized eCAD tools for schematic capture, simulation, and layout reviews, minimizing design errors and improving time-to-market.
  • Collaborated with manufacturing teams to develop production test setups, improving build efficiency and reducing defects.
  • Applied VHDL, firmware, and mechanical design knowledge to ensure seamless system integration and cross-domain alignment.
  • Conducted in-depth debugging, root cause analysis, and field failure resolution, significantly reducing warranty claims.

  • Experience in the medical device industry with exposure to surgical techniques and clinical workflows.
  • Expertise in RF and power electronics design, with a focus on safety, reliability, and compliance with medical standards.
  • Skilled in planning and conducting user evaluations of product concepts, analysing data, documenting findings, and presenting actionable design recommendations to cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply creativity and innovation to solve complex, ambiguous problems lacking predefined solutions.
  • Proven project management capabilities, including team leadership, task planning, milestone tracking, resource allocation, and budget management.
  • Strong capability to assess emerging technologies through comprehensive reviews of state-of-the-art research and market trends.
