The Senior Process Engineer – Automation is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic Sustaining Engineering team at the forefront of innovation and operational excellence. Based in Ponce-PR, this role offers the chance to work on cutting-edge automation technologies, supporting New Product Introductions (NPI), process-product transfers, and continuous improvement projects that directly impact the future of manufacturing. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager - Sustaining, the position provides a unique opportunity to lead high-impact projects, troubleshoot complex systems, and contribute to the development and validation of advanced manufacturing equipment. - Provides technical and sustaining engineering support in a manufacturing area.
- Recommends and implements equipment and process modifications to meet quality standards and improve production efficiencies, manufacturing techniques as well as production yields for existing products.
- Integrates equipment and material capabilities to meet process module target specifications and technology target specifications.
- Reviews product development requirements for compatibility with processing methods to determine costs and schedules.
- Interacts with product design and development personnel to ensure that processes and designs are compatible.
- May develop and conduct statistical analysis or recommend additions to document work.
- Leads the innovation, development and/or optimization of new manufacturing concepts, processes and procedures for transfer to manufacturing operations.
- This can include scouting and feasibility work, material selection, process and equipment selection, tooling / fixture and equipment installation and assessment of inputs, outputs and alignment to requirements.
- Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control and may develop those techniques including the measurement systems.
- Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.
Must-Have: Minimum Requirements:
- Requires a Bachelor degree in Engineering
- and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience OR PhD with 0 years relevant experience.
- Knowledge (programming, troubleshooting) of automation systems such as PLC’s, Vision Systems, HMI’s, stepper motors, encoders, sensors, servo motors, networking/communication, and data management.
Nice to Have:
- Trained/Certified in Lean manufacturing and/or Six Sigma and/or DRM and expertise in their process optimization methods. Ability to use automation to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and ensure consistent quality.
- Experience in troubleshooting and debugging automation equipment prior to Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
- Experience with medium to high-volume assembly and test equipment technologies, including validation protocols (IQ / CQ / OQ / PQ / MSA).
- Experience in a regulated industry, such as Medical, Pharmaceutical, Defense or Aerospace.
- Advanced Programming Knowledge: control systems languages like Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Function Block Diagrams.
- Industrial Control Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Experience with vendors like Siemens, Rockwell Automation, or Allen-Bradley is a huge plus.
- Robotics and Machine Vision: Familiarity with integrating robotics into manufacturing lines; robotics knowledge (programing, understanding and troubleshooting for equipment such as EPSON, STAUBLI, UR, ABB. Experience with machine vision systems for quality control, such as Cognex or Keyence.
- Problem-solving and critical thinking. Strong troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving technical issues in real-time.
- Well-versed in project management tools including Microsoft Project, Excel and project milestone reporting. Ability to manage cross-functional teams and budgets for automation projects
