Medtronic’s Coronary and Renal Denervation (CRDN) division is seeking a Senior Principal Electrical Engineer to join a dynamic team focused on transforming the design and development of a novel energy-based therapeutic devices for hypertension treatment. In this position, you’ll apply your wide-ranging technical expertise and business insight to contribute to the creation of next-generation capital equipment medical device.

This position is in Mounds View, MN. within the Coronary & Renal Denervation (CRDN) operating unit. We are working on-site 4 days per week as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary. This role will require less than 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

A Day in the Life

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Senior Principal Electrical Engineer role. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

Electrical Engineering in New Product Development

  • Apply core principles of electrical engineering throughout the new product development lifecycle. This includes designing, developing, and testing electrical capital equipment systems for medical devices, ensuring strict alignment with relevant industry standards such as IEC 60601.

Project Leadership and Planning

  • Lead technical project planning initiatives by establishing comprehensive strategies, timelines, specifying deliverables, and proactively identifying potential risks. Execute risk mitigation strategies as integral components of project management. Communicate progress to program leadership.

Design and Documentation

  • Support the creation of in-depth electrical specifications, schematicslayouts and integration into mechanical design. Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to fulfill design and performance criteria. Oversee change management and documentation to maintain accuracy and integrity across BOMs, specifications, and drawings. Apply system-level knowledge to ensure proper requirements flow down and integration.

System Integration and Testing

  • Manage system-level integration of hardware, firmware, and software components. Design, develop, and qualify functional and safety test systems at both product and PCBA levels to assure optimal performance, reliability and regulatory compliance. Ensure that custom test equipment aligns with design input and design verification strategies and take ownership of design verification for electrical performance attributes.

Risk Assessment and Issue Resolution

  • Perform detailed risk assessments and root cause investigations during product development. Apply effective corrective and preventive actions to sustain product reliability and quality. Engage in risk management activities such as FMEA to identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to electrical and electronic components using appropriate quality controls.

Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Partner with reliability and manufacturing teams to optimize design for scalability, cost-effectiveness, and superior performance. Work in tandem with R&D, manufacturing, clinical, service and regulatory affairs teams to ensure alignment on strategies impacting system electrical performance.

Verification, Validation, and Quality Reporting

  • Manage verification and validation efforts to ensure product safety, regulatory compliance, and efficacy. Maintain thorough documentation, including technical specifications and quality records, and prepare regular quality reports to communicate performance metrics and trends to key stakeholders.

Mentorship and Professional Development

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineering staff, cultivating a collaborative and innovative working culture. Stay abreast of developments in electrical engineering, emerging technologies, and industry best practices to continually advance team capabilities and project success.

Qualifications

Must Have - Minimum Requirements

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLE, PLEASE BE SURE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ARE EVIDENT ON YOUR RESUME

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Electrical Engineering, Engineering or a technical discipline
  • Minimum of 10 years of technical experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years technical experience

Nice to Have

  • Comprehensive understanding of FDA regulations, specifically 21 CFR Part 820, as well as standards such as ISO 13485 and IEC 60601, and other related regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrated expertise in statistical methodologies and applications.
  • At least one year of direct experience in a quality-focused position within the medical device industry, with an emphasis on electrical and electronic components.
  • Familiarity with various test methods, as well as a sound grasp of both electrical and mechanical systems and core engineering principles.
  • Background in large, matrixed organizations, with particular experience in Medical Device product development.
  • Proven ability in solving complex problems and applying systems engineering approaches.
  • A track record of successfully leading and contributing to broad improvement initiatives.
  • Certification as a Quality Engineer (CQE) or Reliability Engineer (CRE) is preferred.
  • Expertise in analog, digital, high voltage, or RF circuit design.
  • Direct involvement in EMC design and testing, particularly in accordance with IEC 60601 standards.
  • Demonstrated ability in system-level integration of hardware and firmware components.
  • Proficiency in prototyping, testing, and debugging printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Development of hardware test systems for purposes of design verification and production support.
  • Ability to produce clear and comprehensive engineering documentation.
  • Skilled in the use of analysis, simulation, and statistics
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM), design for testability (DFT), Six Sigma methodologies, Lean processes, or other structured problem-solving techniques.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$156,000.00 - $234,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
