A Day in the Life

The Sr. Principal Enterprise Architect is a technical leadership and hands on architecture role that partners with business and technical teams across the value stream operating model. This role is responsible for defining and leading technology roadmaps aligned with Operating Unit priorities, business strategy, Product Strategy and Lifecycle Management, Quality and Healthcare Regulatory requirements along with architectural expertise to be applied on Mergers, Acquisition and Divestiture projects.
The architect works with capability owners to assess the current technology portfolio, identify gaps, and guide the maturation, modernization, and migration of technologies. The role collaborates closely with Enterprise Architects, Business Solution Architects, Technical Architects, Business Relationship Managers, business stakeholders, and external partners to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture strategy, Medtronic standards, and delivery capabilities.
This position advances the Enterprise Architecture practice by establishing and maintaining enterprise standards, reference architectures, patterns, guidelines, and best practices. The role also mentors employees to strengthen architectural capabilities and strategic planning.

ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE & STRATEGY

  • Establish and enforce Enterprise Standards, Patterns, Guidelines, and Best Practices.
  • Develop value stream strategies, capability models, and technology roadmaps.

  • Assess the technology portfolio, identify gaps, and guide maturation and modernization plans.

  • Evaluate IT solutions, assess technical risks, and guide architectural direction.

  • Identify opportunities and risks across the value stream ecosystem and lead platform strategy.

  • Support design decisions that operationalize and maintain the technology landscape.

GOVERNANCE & ARCHITECTURE REVIEW

  • Support teams engaging with the Architecture Review Board and IT Governance Boards.
  • Represent Global Architecture in reviewing new initiatives, component viability, and design decisions.

  • Participate in the Architecture Review Board and IT Leadership Councils to uphold enterprise standards.

  • Ensure adherence to IT governance activities, including architecture boards and governance councils.

  • Ensure architecture documentation and Technical Risk Reviews are complete and stored in the architecture repository.

SOLUTION DEVELOPMENT & COLLABORATION

  • Align business and technical solution architecture across design, implementation, and modifications.
  • Consult with technology teams to ensure systems and infrastructure align with architecture strategy.

  • Partner with architects and business stakeholders to:

    • Develop value stream roadmaps.

    • Identify business drivers for investment prioritization.

    • Assess current-state capabilities and technologies.

    • Establish capability maturation plans and technology portfolio rationalization.

    • Evaluate industry and market trends and their impact.

    • Conduct impact analysis for change management.

    • Support solution selection and system integrator evaluations.

  • Facilitate the Solution Selection Process to ensure alignment with enterprise standards.

  • Partner with Global Portfolio Management and Enterprise Portfolio Management to align plans with enterprise deliveries.

  • Communicate architectural outcomes and progress to senior leadership.

SPECIALIZED ARCHITECTURE FOCUS

  • Design for connected devices, edge computing, mobile, A2A and B2B integration using webMethods or similar technologies, applying Human Centered Design and design thinking.
  • Support Quality, Regulatory, Product Strategy (including PLM), Mergers & Acquisitions, and E2Earchitecture.

  • Define enterprise data architecture and governance with clinical data standards and real‑world patterns.

  • Lead interoperability and API strategy using standards such as FHIR, HL7 V2+, DICOM, OMOP, and secure partner data exchanges.

  • Lead technical due diligence, carve‑in/carve‑out plans, TSA exits, and Day 1/Day 100 roadmaps for Mergers, Acquisitions & Divestitures.

  • Design solution roadmaps using SAFe/Scaled Agile and align to business capability and process frameworks such as APQC, EPMO tools, and process mining.

  • Hands‑on work with cloud (Azure / AWS), containers/Kubernetes, microservices, data pipelines and event streaming with kafka or similar, and DevSecOps.

  • Mentor employees to expand architecture skills, strategic planning, and subject matter expertise.
  • Promote business capability development, process excellence, and best practices.

  • Support innovation, demand, and portfolio processes by gathering and evaluating new ideas.

  • Partner with business and IT to identify opportunities to advance strategic objectives with technology.

  • Serve as a role model for Medtronic values and core competencies.

MUST HAVE:

· Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of relevant IT experience or and advanced degree with 8+ years of relevant IT experience

NICE TO HAVE:

· 5+ years of experience aligned to a relevant architecture discipline (solution architecture, integrations, services, infrastructure, deployment and support of technology)

· 5+ years working with data architecture, data modeling, data management

· 3+ years of experience and strong knowledge of Enterprise-class architecture concepts, definition, and creation

· 3+ years of experience in information architecture or 5+ years of experience as data analyst, business intelligence analyst, or equivalent roles

· 2+ years of experience with data architecture of cloud-based solutions (e.g., applications (SaaS), platforms (PaaS), and infrastructure (IaaS)) within an Enterprise environment

· High degree of ‘learning agility’ with the ability to readily consume and apply new information and concepts with developed analytical problem-solving skills

· 3+ years of experience working with large enterprise ERP data models

· 3+ years of experience in business capability, process, technology, and data modeling

· Knowledge in user experience modeling, information design, and concept generation

· Certifications in frameworks such as TOGAF or other service and control frameworks, such as ITIL or COBIT

· Strong business acumen, decision making, and influence skills across all levels of an organization

· Excellent leadership and teamwork skills

· Strong communication skills, including with employees, clients, senior management and vendors

· Strong results orientation (driving to deadlines, financial targets, project goals, etc.)

· Ability to work collaboratively and partner with employees, leaders, clients, and vendors

· Demonstrated ability to work in a global, virtual organization

· Excellent presentation skills, including the ability to translate technical information into business terms (e.g., ability to explain complex technical solutions and architecture strategies to non-technical resources)

· Technology depth and credibility with technical staff

· Work experience in the Medical Device Industry, or other regulated industry

· Ability to mentor and develop business, architecture, and technical resources

· Able to work independently as well as cooperatively

· Past internal experience (employee/constant) in the value streams is a large plus

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$152,800.00 - $229,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
