We are currently looking for an experienced Design Technician IV for our Mounds View, Minnesota location. Working within the Operations Innovation (OI) Manufacturing Technology organization, this role provides support for the Mounds View North 7th Floor Development Lab and Cleanroom. As part of the OI Manufacturing Technology group, you will support lab activities including building, testing, documenting, and troubleshooting prototypes and using various equipment to support design verification and product development. With a focus on quality and compliance, we empower teams focused on research, innovation, development, and manufacturing

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Design, modify, and improve components, systems, and equipment to support product development, manufacturability, and field service needs.

  • Gather requirements, perform studies and calculations, and prepare layouts, sketches, and documentation to support design proposals.

  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, materials, and planning teams to ensure designs meet manufacturing, material availability, and specification requirements.

  • Troubleshoot, program, configure, and maintain electromechanical, automated, and computer‑controlled equipment used in design, testing, and development environments.

  • Build, modify, and support test fixtures, prototypes, and development hardware; execute verification and characterization testing, collect data, and document results.

  • Perform root cause analysis for equipment or test failures and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and performance.

  • Maintain equipment documentation, calibration, and configuration records in compliance with SOPs, quality system, and safety requirements.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment performance, test efficiency, and lab operations.

  • Apply strong problem‑solving skills and technical judgment, including the ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Requires minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.

  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent (United States), vocational or technical education or certification (all other countries).

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting R&D, design, and/or manufacturing teams

  • Familiarity with PLC programming, scripting languages, or test automation software

  • Experience with soldering

  • Experience with welding

  • Experience with data acquisition systems and instrumentation

  • Knowledge of regulated or quality controlled environments (e.g., medical devices)

TECHNICIAN SUPPORT CAREER STREAM: Provides technical support in areas such as production, operations, maintenance, safety, testing, process improvement or product development. Uses schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions or defined plans to perform testing and troubleshooting on electronic or mechanical components, equipment or systems. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data using established formulae and procedures, and performs detailed mathematical calculations. For higher levels, may suggest and/or make improvements to optimize work processes.

DIFFERENTIATING FACTORS

Autonomy: Trains, delegates and reviews the work of lower level employees and may be responsible for leading daily operations of a work team.
Runs projects, including performing complex tests, interpreting data, developing key reports and providing updates to the broader team.

Work consists of technical tasks that are complex and complicated.

Innovation and Complexity: Technical problems faced are general, and may require understanding of broader sets of issues and other job areas, but typically are not complex.
May be responsible for working with supervisor to identify potential adjustments or enhancements in systems and processes to solve problems or improve effectiveness of job area.

Communication and Influence: Communicates typically with internal contacts.
Obtains and provides technical information on matters of significant importance to the job areas or project.

Leadership and Talent Management: May act as a team lead and assistant to the supervisor / manager.
May delegate tasks to other team members and be responsible for the review of work product.
Does not have formal management responsibilities, but may provide input to management in this area.

Required Knowledge and Experience: Requires minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
Requires high school diploma or equivalent (United States), vocational or technical education or certification (all other countries).

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$80,400.00 - $120,600.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
