Our company's Research Laboratories Boston is focused on driving discovery research. Our multi-disciplinary discovery research site offers state-of- the-art resources to explore the most promising science combined with our company's world-class R&D expertise in small molecules, peptides, biologics and nucleic acids. Located within the heart of the Massachusetts biomedical community, research conducted in our laboratories spans exploratory biology through early clinical development and is an integral part of our company's powerful world-class network of drug and vaccine discovery.

Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPS) is a multi-disciplinary research group that enables drug discovery and drug product development through application of pharmaceutical science and drug delivery research from target identification through clinical candidate selection for both small and large molecules.

DPS influences molecular design of novel therapeutics through physicochemical property profiling, de-risking strategies, and communication across functions and downstream to development partners. We further utilize our expertise to develop and study prototype formulations intended for clinical use, and deliver robust Good Laboratory Practice formulations. In aggregate, our team enables the transition of the right molecules from discovery to clinical formulation development with clinical formulation strategies in place. This position offers the unique opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative drug delivery technologies and the advancement of novel drug products through solving unique challenges in delivering diverse modalities and driving scientific rigor to maintain the leading position of DPS in pharmaceutics assessment.

DPS team in Boston, MA is seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist for a lab-based role with creative passion for identifying and applying effective drug delivery technologies and pharmaceutics concepts to rapidly progress from idea conception to in-vitro & in-vivo evaluation of novel drug candidates.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design and execute physicochemical characterization and formulation development experiments of diverse modalities for pharmacology, toxicology and FIH studies.

  • Direct and advocate pipeline-focused novel drug delivery technologies and strategies across the Discovery portfolio and into Development, impacting across functional areas.

  • Conduct developability assessment of new drug candidates.

  • Perform technical and trend analysis of the data and communicate data to project teams and functional management.

  • As part of our Company’s emphasis on innovation, the successful candidate also will actively explore external (commercial and academic) opportunities to engage new technologies related to drug delivery, pharmaceutics, and other areas relevant to our company's drug discovery/development programs.

  • Limited travel to scientific conferences and broader Pharmaceutical Sciences department meetings (< 5%).

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical / Biochemical/ Biomedical engineering, or related disciplines or with 0+ years of industrial experience or a M.S. with 4+ years of relevant industrial experience.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Practical experience and/or a strong interest to learn and implement new drug delivery and analytical technologies.

  • Practical experience working within cross-disciplinary project teams and achieving results in a matrix environment.

  • Strong organizational and technical problem-solving skills and excellent management in driving results and innovation.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience solving program trials by leveraging strong scientific fundamentals in related subject areas including organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biopharmaceutics, process development, and/or engineering.

  • Experience in pre-clinical / clinical formulation development and physicochemical characterization and drug delivery of small and/or large molecules.

  • Advanced data analysis and visualization skills.
