Job Description:

The Molecular & Viral Safety group within Cell Based Sciences, Analytical R&D is seeking applicants for a Principal Scientist position located at our West Point, PA research facility. The successful candidate will join an expanding team and lead the establishment and development of a next generation sequencing (NGS) laboratory. The aim and purpose of the laboratory is to enable and accelerate process and product development to ensure the safety and quality of our diverse portfolio of world leading products. The role will require individuals direct the technical and scientific operation of a new sequencing laboratory and ensure the proper supervision or performance of test procedures, adherence to the department's quality control standards and accurate reporting of findings of tests. The successful candidates will be able to collaborate in a dynamic, integrated, and multidisciplinary team environment working across both Vaccine and Biological modalities.


Role And Responsibilities

  • Define, implement, and monitor standards of performance for the NGS laboratory and ensure all testing programs conform to internal standards of practice and ensure scientific rigor.

  • Monitor and accountable for all work performed in the NGS laboratory and ensure scientific review of data to confirm that all data generated is reliable.

  • Drive laboratory best practices and ensure all activities adhere to Environmental Health & Safety policies and practices.

  • Contributes expertise and creativity to solving complex project problems across a portfolio and to departmental strategy for the implementation of NGS technologies across modalities.

  • Working with the Director to provide team leadership in building a team and culture of innovation, continuous learning, safety, compliance, and operational excellence.

  • Deliver operational excellence within the NGS lab, working with the Director to plan & forecast work, capital and consumables.

  • Provide ongoing scientific mentorship and coaching to laboratory staff to foster a culture of excellence.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • A Ph.D with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience; or a master’s degree with a minimum of 12 years relevant experience; or bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 16 years’ experience in virology, microbiology, molecular biology, biological sciences, or related discipline in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Experience working with and managing NGS based laboratory methods (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, library preparation, Illumina based instruments, long-read sequencing).

  • Working knowledge of regulatory and industry guidelines in the area of biosafety testing, including compendial requirements, CFR and ICH requirements, and WHO/EMA/FDA regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop talent through good mentoring skills.

  • Demonstrated ability for taking initiative, creativity, and innovation in problem solving.

  • A strong team player with excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work both independently for development of assays and cross-functionally; Plan assay optimization and documentation to meet program deadlines.

  • Experience with matrix management and peer to peer coaching

  • Strong ability to deliver complex objectives under aggressive timelines in a rapidly changing environment.

  • ​Demonstrated scientific ability through publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations in scientific conferences.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated creativity, and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to deliver complex objectives under strict timelines in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Ability to work in a diverse, cross-functional team environment. Authoring and reviewing internal technical reports, sections of regulatory filings (e.g., IND, BLA) and external scientific publications.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Familiarity with NGS data flow and computational methods.

  • Familiarity with electronic laboratory notebook applications and good documentation practices.

  • Prior work in a biopharmaceutical industry and knowledge of cGMP/GLP/GCP practices.
