FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager, I/E Electronic & Instrumentation Technician will utilize strong knowledge of precision measurement science (Metrology), mathematics, physics, and electronics to test, calibrate, troubleshoot, maintain and repair instrumentation/controls. All duties must be performed in compliance with established company, department, and safety policies and procedures within GXP-regulated and non-GXP facilities.
The incumbent will execute daily work assignments and ensure timely completion of all scheduled and unscheduled events for instrumentation systems controls, and analytical laboratory instruments. The individual in this role will collect, compile, measure, summarize, and record data obtained during scheduled calibration and/or unscheduled work requests. This position will work in conjunction with Facilities, Engineering, Validation, Manufacturing, and Quality Control Laboratory Departments to help the company and all of its personnel to reach their goals in providing a safe, clean, and efficient environment.
Electronic and Instrument Technicians are part of the I/E Technician work group and will primarily share work assignments within their job grouping with no inherent or “system imposed” limits. Based on business needs, I/E Technicians will perform maintenance activities including crossing between job groupings where skills are common. Portions of job requires working with voltages up to 600V and under the guidance of NFPA 70E.
EQUIPMENT:
Strong knowledge of instrumentation, PLCs and electronic and pneumatic loop control systems within the following disciplines: Analytical, Conductivity, DC and Low Frequency Electromagnetic Flow, Level, Mechanical, Optical, pH, Pressure, Temperature, Time, Speed and Weight.
DUTIES:
Perform routine calibrations of instrumentation. Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, design, installation, and configuration of equipment, instrumentation and control systems:
Identify and correct measurement errors
Replace instrumentation and controls as needed
Maintain configuration management to ensure compliance of the system
Redline drawings, engineering documentation and other technical specifications
As necessary provide input and support for the design, installation, and upgrade of instrumentation and control systems
Execute assignments to support Metrology, Facilities, and/or Engineering projects
Identify “Out of Tolerance” conditions and perform corrective actions to return the device to within specification. Participate with investigating and documenting the potential impact that the “Out of Tolerance” condition may have had on the instrumentation and process.
Develop and/or revise calibration procedures and job plans while looking for ways to improve how calibrations and troubleshooting is performed in an attempt to make those practices more efficient.
Provide support and training to peers to improve their abilities and increase their technical knowledge
Maintain instruments, standards and tools. Perform equipment inspection prior to and upon return from vendor certification and review associated documentation.
Attend and actively participates in initiatives to support the business. Prepares and assists technicians, managers and planner/schedulers in preparing labor/material estimates. Assists supervision with the assigning, scheduling and prioritization of work order requests using maintenance management systems. Makes recommendations and prepare orders for spare parts, additional stock room items, tools, etc. Consults with supervision and other mechanics on problem resolution/troubleshooting. Keep supervision informed of problem issues.
EDUCATION and Experience:
Required
Proof of High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
And
Graduate of an Instrumentation and Controls course (2 years minimum), from a recognized technical institute with subjects covering instrument control systems and component maintenance. With a minimum of 4 years recent full time (8,000 hours) (within the last 10 years) industrial or military experience as an Instrument Technician with a broad spectrum of calibration and process control experience involving but not limited to Conductivity, Flow, Level, pH, Pressure, Temperature, Speed and Weight, RH, Gas Concentrations, Electrical, etc.
Skills:
Must possess good organizational, communication and time management skills, with a strong attention to detail, be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures, Calibration Procedures, and work instructions.
Must be self-motivated, able to work both independently and as part of a team with strict adherence to all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures. Candidates must have good comprehension and work experience using calibration principals, along with basic computer skills.
Completion of a formal 5-year Instrument Technician apprentice program, including work on instrument control systems and component maintenance. With a minimum of 4 years recent full time (8,000 hours) (within the last 10 years) industrial or military experience as an Instrument Technician with a broad spectrum of calibration and process control experience involving but not limited to Conductivity, Flow, Level, pH, Pressure, Temperature, Speed and Weight, RH, Gas Concentrations, Electrical, etc.
Must possess good organizational, communication and time management skills, with a strong attention to detail, be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures, Calibration Procedures, and work instructions.
Must be self-motivated, able to work both independently and as part of a team with strict adherence to all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures. Candidates must have good comprehension and work experience using calibration principals, along with basic computer skills.
Verified Military training equivalent to a recognized/accredited trade school program or journeyman apprenticeship program. With a minimum of 4 years recent full time (8,000 hours) (within the last 10 years) industrial or military experience as an Instrument Technician with a broad spectrum of calibration and process control experience involving but not limited to Conductivity, Flow, Level, pH, Pressure, Temperature, Speed and Weight, RH, Gas Concentrations, Electrical, etc.
Must possess good organizational, communication and time management skills, with a strong attention to detail, be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures, Calibration Procedures, and work instructions.

OR
Successful completion of the NCCER Instrumentation assessment or ISA-CCST level 2 certified, with seven (7) years of recent full time (within the last 10 years) industrial or military experience as an Instrument Technician with a broad spectrum of calibration and process control experience involving but not limited to Conductivity, Flow, Level, pH, Pressure, Temperature, Speed and Weight, RH, Gas Concentrations, Electrical, etc.
Must possess good organizational, communication and time management skills, with a strong attention to detail, be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures, Calibration Procedures, and work instructions.
Must be self-motivated, able to work both independently and as part of a team with strict adherence to all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures. Candidates must have good comprehension and work experience using calibration principals, along with basic computer skills.
OR
Completion of a relevant technical program from a recognized technical institute (subjects may include: electronics, electrical, math, engineering, physics, etc.) with at least ten (10) years of recent full time (within the last 15 years) industrial or military experience as an Instrument Technician with a broad spectrum of calibration and process control experience involving but not limited to Conductivity, Flow, Level, pH, Pressure, Temperature, Speed and Weight, RH, Gas Concentrations, Electrical, etc.
Must possess good organizational, communication and time management skills, with a strong attention to detail, be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures, Calibration Procedures, and work instructions.
Must be self-motivated, able to work both independently and as part of a team with strict adherence to all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures.
Candidates must have good comprehension and work experience using calibration principals, along with basic computer skills.
Trained in Electrical Safety NFPA-70E (144 hours of formal instruction on electrical safety, electrical system). GMP experience working in a biopharmaceutical facility or equivalent experience in a regulated industry Experience working within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or a Computerized Calibration Management System (CCMS).
Equipment or Machinery Operated:
Working knowledge of hand and power tools, must be able to identify and properly use the correct tools and NIST traceable test equipment for the task assigned including multi-meters, RTDs, temperature baths, dry blocks, pressure indicators, dew point monitors, tachometers, timers, weights, scales and dimension indicators.Working knowledge of pneumatics is also required.
Special Skills or Abilities:
Ability to read blueprints, drawings, technical manuals and based on them, performs necessary operations for the installation and/or repair of equipment. Experience with Hazardous Energy Control and Line Break is desirable.
Special Job Features:
Some heavy lifting, use of solvents, being around and/or in contact with dirt and dust, heat and cold, loud operating equipment, must wear safety shoes, glasses, fall protection, and any other types of PPE required to perform work.
May be required to carry a pager and/or a radio, subject to immunizations. To be able to use material handling equipment and man lifts.
Remarks:
Required to take immunizations as prescribed by our Health Services Department.
Must wear Company issued uniform per our SOP.
