Overview

The Contract Manufacturing Material Management team within the Material Strategy & Execution organization, part of the Windows + Devices Supply Chain group, is seeking a Senior Materials Manager to play a key leadership role in driving materials management excellence with our Contract Manufacturers (CMs) and across a global end-to-end supply chain network that delivers Windows devices to customers worldwide. This position is based in Haiphong, Vietnam, and will operate onsite at the CM campus.

This position will oversee global materials management and supply chain execution to ensure material readiness, inventory optimization, risk mitigation, and uninterrupted manufacturing operations across multiple product programs. The role partners closely with engineering, sourcing, procurement, finance, suppliers, and factory operations teams to deliver operational excellence, cost efficiency, and successful product launches.

Responsibilities

COS (Continuity of Supply) Management:

  • Create consistent and comprehensive visibility into materials pipeline in support of production plans.
  • Map out complex multi-tier supply chain networks to ensure alignment in material supply and demand by partnering with the Sourcing, Manufacturing, and Finance organizations.
  • Identify supply risk and drive for resolutions proactively.
  • Manage risk buy to ensure new project launch with right time and right quantity.

E&O (Excess & Obsolete) Management:

  • Timely E&O review and validation with CM’s (contract manufacturers) to identify and mitigate Microsoft exposure.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Supply Planning to ensure proper reserve in place to cover risk.
  • Manage scrap process to ensure timely disposition on obsolete materials.
  • Perfect execution on last time buy and EOL to achieve zero excess and liability.

Inventory Control:

  • Ownership for component inventory throughout the Microsoft Hardware supply chain network.
  • Set up material buffer strategies that best serve the supply chain models and fillow up on execution.
  • Understand overall MS inventory exposure by analyzing set of inventory reports from CM’s.
  • Make sure CM inventory movements cop with build plan changes and Microsoft buffer strategy.
  • Monitor inventory level on WIP, semi-FG, and FG to identify and mitigate risk.
  • Project manage impaired inventory to ensure quick disposition. Track impaired inventory amount against reserves.

Continuous Improvement on Supplier’s Materials Management Capability:

  • Identify and deliver projects that enhances the existing supply chain and material management practices and processes.
  • Provide leadership to material planning team (including those from supply base) to achieve KPIs.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Supply Chain Analytics, or related field AND 7+ years supply planning, operations, supply chain, indirect supply planning, technology-related supply chain, sourcing and manufacturing, Sales & Operations Planning, materials requirement planning systems and tools, quantitative & qualitative analysis in cross functional or organizational enterprise environment, or related experience.
    • OR Master's Degree in Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Business, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Supply Chain Analytics, or related field AND 5+ years supply planning, operations, supply chain, indirect supply planning, technology-related supply chain, sourcing and manufacturing, Sales & Operations Planning, materials requirement planning systems and tools, quantitative & qualitative analysis in cross functional or organizational enterprise environment, or related experience.
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ plus years of experience managing materials in high-tech manufacturing, consumer electronics and supply chain.
  • Significant experience in a variety of manufacturing and/or planning environments.
  • Background in managing international relationships and remote organizations.
  • Solid leadership could drive the mutual solution through the collaboration with multiple cross functional teams.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Outstanding data analysis, logic thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
  • Science/Engineer education background.
  • MBA in supply chain management preferred.

An ideal candidate for the Senior Materials Manager role will have the following skills and experience:

  • In depth materials management knowledge and experience for high-volume/high-mix and low-volume/ high-mix manufacturing.
  • In depth knowledge on factory operations and manufacturing process.
  • Ability to develop efficient work processes for complex projects involving many groups, across multiple geographies and effectively coordinate, implement and maintain those processes.
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with senior management and executives (internally & externally) with the ability to effectively communicate and present to all levels of management.
  • A strategic thinker with a proven track record of implementing and delivering complex supply chain solutions across multiple geographies.
  • Deals well with tough political situations and are proactive in building and maintaining a network of effective relationships.
  • Readily and easily switches gears in response to unexpected events and circumstances.
  • Analyzes, explains and draws logical conclusions based on complex and ambiguous data from multiple content areas.
