Overview

Microsoft’s Windows + Devices Group designs, manufactures and delivers creative hardware solutions and devices such as Surface and Xbox, bringing superior experiences to customers for modern life and work. As Microsoft expands its manufacturing footprint into a new start-up factory in Vietnam, we are building the test and quality engineering capability required to ship the highest quality products from day one.

This is a combined Hardware Engineer II role focusing on factory On-Device Test and factory product quality improvement. You will own ODT test for New Product Introduction (NPI) programs, run ODT audits for sustaining products, and support the Product Quality Manager team for OBA test in factory. You will work cross-functionally with Microsoft operations and engineering teams and T1 supplier to ensure ODT test execution in factory, solve product quality issues, and drive continuous improvement.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

ODT Test for NPI Programs

  • Develop, bring up and own On-Device Test systems and test coverage for Microsoft Surface products introduced in the Vietnam factory during New Product Introduction (NPI).
  • Co-work with the development and design teams on test solutions and test architecture for design verification, and provide architectural input for tester and server configuration.
  • Bring up, debug and fine-tune test equipment and test stations on the line during product build and NPI ramp.
  • Perform failure analysis on units that fail at Surface product test stations, drive root cause identification, and feed findings back into design and process improvements.
  • Ensure test systems, limits and data collection are validated and production-ready before mass production hand-off.

ODT Audit for Sustaining Products

  • Plan and execute regular ODT audits across sustaining (in-production) products to confirm test stations, test limits, calibration and coverage remain valid and effective.
  • Monitor test yield, false-call and escape rates; identify drift or gaps and drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) with the responsible teams.
  • Maintain test documentation, version control and change management for sustaining test systems, and enforce consistency with China counterpart sites.
  • Continuously improve test throughput, reliability and diagnostic capability for products already in mass production.

Support to Product Quality Management Team

  • Support and collaborate with PQM peers for OBA test plan, script/tool development and optimization.
  • Support PQM peers for product software quality issue triage with cross-functional teams and the CAPA process for root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions.
  • Drive clear, accurate communication and recommendations to peers and senior management by distilling complex technical challenges, outlining options and providing supporting data.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience.
    • OR equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related field – or equivalent relevant working experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in factory test engineering / software development for hardware test, ideally in consumer electronics manufacturing.
  • Solid programming skill and experience with .NET frameworks (e.g. WPF, WCF, WinForms) and with OO design, design patterns and SOLID principles.
  • Hands-on experience bringing up, debugging and fine-tuning test equipment and stations on a production line.
  • Good English communication skills, both oral and written; working language is English and Vietnamese (Mandarin is a plus for China collaboration).
  • Quality Engineer certification or a Master’s degree.
  • Knowledge of Quality System Regulation, Statistical Process Control (SPC) and ISO Quality System Standards.
  • Experience working in Agile (SCRUM) teams.
  • Prior experience with NPI ramp and/or sustaining product test in a high-volume factory.
  • Solid passion, accountability and a positive work attitude.
  • Thrives in ambiguous, fast-paced environments – a self-starter who can work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Leadership as an agent of change; a team player able to influence others without direct authority.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with solid attention to detail.
  • Results-oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
