Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

In alignment with our Microsoft values, we are committed to cultivating an inclusive work environment for all employees to positively impact our culture every day.

We are looking for a Datacenter Engineering Senior BAS Engineer who will be part of the team responsible for the development of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs in the AMER region.

The Senior BAS Engineer serves as a technical leader, providing strategic guidance and subject matter expertise to internal stakeholders, external design partners, and cross-functional engineering teams. This role requires deep expertise in data center Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC cooling infrastructure, controls architectures, network topologies, communication protocols, signal types, and low-voltage system design.

Responsibilities include defining and governing BAS design standards, reviewing and approving control strategies, specifications, points lists, integration requirements, and network architectures to ensure consistency, scalability, reliability, and operational excellence across Microsoft's global data center portfolio. The Senior BAS Engineer will lead BAS-focused workgroups comprised of Architectural and Engineering (A/E) firms, system integrators, commissioning providers, and key Microsoft stakeholders to drive alignment and continuous improvement.

This role requires the ability to effectively influence, communicate, and coordinate across engineering, operations, commissioning, construction, and vendor organizations to deliver high-quality Building Automation System solutions at global scale. Success requires exceptional organizational skills, rigorous attention to detail, and a collaborative growth mindset focused on standardization, engineering excellence, quality, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Building Automation System (BAS) subject matter expert (SME) during hyperscale data center design, construction, commissioning, and operations for new construction, expansions, retrofits, and upgrades.

  • Lead the development, governance, and continuous improvement of BAS standards, specifications, sequences of operation, and design requirements.

  • Drive BAS strategies that directly support data center availability, scalability, energy efficiency, and operational excellence across Microsoft's global portfolio.

  • Lead technical consistency and quality across multiple projects, regions, and vendors.

  • Partner with mechanical, electrical, commissioning, construction, and operations teams to ensure BAS systems meet Microsoft reliability and performance expectations.

  • Identify and resolve complex design, integration, and construction issues that may impact schedule, cost, quality, or operational risk.

  • Support project delivery from conceptual design through turnover and operational acceptance.

  • Review construction drawings, specifications, design guides/standards, sequences of operation, and commissioning documents for technical compliance.
  • Engage with and manage external design consultants and run design workshops and workgroups to ensure they deliver a design from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of the datacenter to our Microsoft design standards.
  • Collaborate with Global Technical Governance team, Global Strategy team, and DC Operations teams to develop datacenter designs, first of kind pilots and prototypes, and maintain the design standard documents for safe, cost effective, quality builds.
  • The position will require some travel to sites for “Factory Witness Testing”, equipment and engineering vendor interaction in the design process, as well as final commissioning of the installed systems. Travel to datacenter projects for engineering audits and reviews are also required.
