Microsoft Americas is one of the three regions of MCAPS Regions, covering the United States, Canada, and Latin America. The Americas profit & loss (P&L) team is part of the overall Americas Finance team and is accountable for full P&L management of the total Americas Regions. The P&L team partners with MCAPS Core teams and acts as a bridge between corporate functions and other Americas Finance teams in P&L matters

The Americas Headcount Senior Controller is responsible for managing headcount for the Americas region, including budgeting, forecasting, closing, and reviews of headcount within Americas regional Management P&L. This role is a vital member of the Americas P&L team and meaningfully participates in financial controller rhythms. Through partnership and collaboration with Regional Sales Enablement & Operations (SE&O), Global Talent Aquisition (GTA), Human Resources (HR), and Field Area Finance teams, the Americas Headcount Controller is responsible for delivering overall headcount accuracy. They also analyze trends and identify insights, risks, and opportunities in headcount and track Position Control Number (PCN) management.

Responsibilities

Prioritization

  • Determines operating expenses compared to expected budget and projections. Identifies variances to provide insights to management and inform future projections. Verifies headcount accuracy.
  • Assists in the execution of annual business planning and forecasting process. Gathers insight and contributes to analysis and research to support preliminary and adjusted forecast cycles.
  • Serves as contact for questions related to transactions, reporting, planning, analysis, and compliance (e.g., close coordination, expenses, compliance with tax, statutory, and accounting regulations, filing requirements, etc.). Provides input for managing.
  • Centrally manage the budget, forecast and Actual process for Headcount, across all Americas Region
  • Understand main variance drivers and deliver insights on hiring ramp and give guidance on forecast future results
  • Inform decision makers on optimization of hiring to blueprint and investment
  • Simplify and optimize headcount reporting for Field Area Controllers
  • Prepare weekly headcount outlooks as a means to help inform any potential risk or help accelerate early hiring
  • Drive headcount accountability and discussions during forecast and month close with leadership
  • Leading PCN management process in partnership with Americas Financial Controllers.

Partnership

  • Serves as contact for questions related to transactions, reporting, planning, analysis, and compliance (e.g., close coordination, expenses, compliance with tax, statutory, and accounting regulations, filing requirements, etc.). Provides input for managing Profit and Loss (P&L), including discussions to optimize operating expenses and headcount.
  • Applies foundational aspects of Microsoft Finance and Controllership (e.g., financial policies, accounting systems, key metrics, relevant statutory, tax, and accounting procedures, reporting, filing, and forecast requirements, etc.) to collect information, maintain compliance requirements, perform technical analysis, and complete standardized reporting. Assimilates impact of external factors and trends to offer insights.
  • Assembles and summarizes data through data mining and business intelligence to structure reports and financial models for decision support. Leverages statistical analysis, predictive analytics, and financial modeling techniques to conduct sophisticated analyses. Acts as subject-matter-expert for data management and operations. Understands history of data procurement, methods, and actions taken.
  • Leverages best-in-class technology (e.g., Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Predictive Analytics etc.) to accomplish goals. Improves current methods used in collecting data, developing automated financial reporting and forecasting tools, and creating standard and ad-hoc reports. Learns how advanced technology is implemented in Finance and across Microsoft to provide greater depth of analysis.
  • Communicates results in a logical, compelling, and understandable message.
  • Partner with HR and GTA to build a foundation that ensures alignment throughout forecast and month close regarding hiring expectations and any potential risk/gap
  • Partner with Business & Sales Operations (BSO) to manage blueprint headcount and investments and understand final blueprint numbers by Field Area for each forecast cycle

Protect

  • Reviews financial and budgetary reports to ensure accuracy and support of internal controls. Monitors accuracy of financial documents and execution of control processes. Performs corrective measures.
  • Ensures documentation and reporting is accessible for internal and external auditors (e.g., local governments). Facilitates dialogue between business stakeholders and internal audit team (shift partner organizations).
  • Ensures compliance with company policies, legal standards, and both regulatory and statutory reporting requirements by reviewing and monitoring accuracy of financial documents and control processes. Drives corrective measures. Prepares reports and filings for all country, federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. Prepares timely and accurate completion of all statutory and tax filings. Supports questions regarding documentation, policy adherence, and sharing of financial data and information.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Data Science or related field AND 6+ years post-graduate financial analysis, accounting, controllership or Finance work experience
    • OR Master's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Data Science or related field AND 4+ years post-graduate financial analysis, accounting, controllership, or finance work experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
Additional Or Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Association of Certified Chartered Accountant (ACCA) or equivalent certification.
  • 1+ year(s) experience in multinationals with multi-product/multi-segment finance roles.
  • 1+ year(s) work experience in matrix-based organization.
  • 1+ year(s) work experience in the technology or software industry.

Controllership IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $91,800 - $178,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $117,900 - $195,000 per year.
