The Microsoft Strategic Missions and Technologies (SMT) division focuses on next-generation technology solutions, including specialized teams empowering telecommunications providers; engineering teams who are helping to carry out challenging missions and connecting the cloud to satellites in space; worldwide research teams leading the way to scalable, accessible quantum computing; and the key technology partner to the U.S. Federal government for achieving their diverse organizations’ missions through digital transformation.

The Azure Space team within SMT division was created to be the platform and ecosystem of choice for the mission needs of the space community. We are looking for a Senior Program Manager to support the development of our virtualized satellite communications ground station platform. You will work closely with external Space ecosystem partners, internal Microsoft partner teams and the Azure Space development team to drive the virtualization of space communications with cloud technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with external customers and partners to derive technical architectures, requirements, and develop program, technology, and product roadmaps.
  • Take a leadership program management role and own the successful delivery of products and capabilities to partners & customers.
  • Work with internal partner teams and with our development team to execute technical program roadmaps and vision.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the cloud virtualization of satellite communications, including application of terrestrial technologies to satellite communications (i.e., ‘5G NTN’).
  • Lead the development of satellite communications virtualization and NTN technologies across partner and Azure Space engineering teams.
  • Stay abreast and informed of the latest technologies and share your findings and insights about their utility and potential for our technical development efforts.
  • Serve as the representative for consortia activities.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 4+ years experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deeply knowledgeable in the architecture, design, operation, and/or implementation of satellite communications ground segment.
  • Extensive knowledge in leading satellite communications ground segment design, architecture and employment, and/or delivery of software products and components of satellite communications ground segments.
  • Knowledge in the virtualization of network functions including accelerated processing and edge computing.
  • Has an understanding of existing customer pain-points and barriers to virtualization in the industry today. Possesses a clear understanding of cloud technologies, and how to employ them to improve adoption and provide demonstrable value to the industry.
  • Working knowledge of Kubernetes.
  • Experience developing new partnerships and working with industry to solve technical and business challenges with new product offerings.
  • Extensive experiance as an engineer or program or product manager on complex technical projects.

Technical Program Management IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
