The Microsoft Datacenter Energy Strategy Team identifies long term growth obstacles and develops global mitigation strategies, centralizing global functions to deliver consistency and scalability. This spans energy technology, resilience, commercial partnership, and business operations strategy.



As the Senior Program Manager, Global Energy Strategy, you will join the Microsoft Datacenter Global Energy Strategy Team to provide power systems and energy technology subject matter expertise and conduct techno-economic assessments of decarbonization strategies and distributed generation/storage assets for critical power solutions to support the global, sustainable, and reliable growth of Microsoft’s datacenters.



You will demonstrate familiarity with power systems analysis, large scale power projects, conventional and carbon-free energy generation and storage technologies, engineering/design/contracting/operations, interconnection analysis, and grid reliability programs and opportunities. You will develop a technical and commercial understanding of the energy technology deployments needed to support Microsoft’s continued datacenter growth.

Responsibilities

  • Makes recommendations for investments in energy technologies that are critical to datacenter delivery based on technical expertise in those products/services, suppliers, and industry trends.
  • Acquires buy in from stakeholders to ensure that resources are in place and influences the adoption of energy technologies based on the sustainability and reliability needs of Microsoft datacenter development.
  • Facilitates early technical engagements with cross functional leadership including product design, quality, and business teams to determine sourcing requirements for complex energy products and/or services.
  • Provides consultation and influences engineering design teams on the choice of new energy technologies that can be reliably sourced to support reliable and sustainable datacenter infrastructure.
  • Ensures that design teams are aware of the systemic implications of energy design choices and clearly articulates anticipated impact on datacenter development and lifecycle.
  • Recommends whether or not to introduce new energy technologies or components for Microsoft cloud infrastructure based on the availability of supply, supplier capability and capacity, competitive and industry trends, and the impact on profits and losses.
  • Evaluates long-term business needs, energy technology maturity, and tradeoffs to influence decision making and suggests processes for implementing changes.
  • Act as a liaison and bi-directional conduit between regional teams and central engineering teams, gathering regional-specific requirements and challenges and provide them back to central engineering teams, working with regional teams to help deploy new solutions. Provide technical support to regional teams to problem solve new challenges and develop new solutions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, or related field AND 4+ years experience in power systems analysis, large-scale power projects, techno-economic assessments of conventional and carbon free power solutions, or related experience
    • OR Master's Degree in Engineering, Science, or related field AND 3+ years experience in power systems analysis, large-scale power projects, techno-economic assessments of conventional and carbon free power solutions, or related experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
    • 2+ years of experience working with power systems OR techno-economic assessments OR decarbonization strategies OR storage assets for critical power solutions

    Other Requirements

    Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, or related field AND 8+ years experience in power systems analysis, large-scale power projects, techno-economic assessments of conventional and carbon free power solutions, or related experience
    • OR Master's Degree in Engineering, Science, or related field AND 6+ years experience in power systems analysis, large-scale power projects, techno-economic assessments of conventional and carbon free power solutions, or related experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
    • Business Analysis: The ability to identify business needs and determine solutions to business problems; solutions may include alternative energy technologies and designs, process improvement, organizational change or strategic planning and policy development.
    • Influence Others: The ability to garner support for initiatives by gaining the respect of others and inspiring trust and confidence.
    • Technology Industry Knowledge: Knowledge of trends, direction, new products, and changes in the technology as it applies to the energy industry, as well as specific knowledge about hardware, software, and services.

    Sourcing Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
