Overview

GitHub is changing the way the world builds software and we want you to help build and secure GitHub. We're looking for an experienced software engineer to help build and maintain our internal tooling, data and infrastructure as they protect the home of all developers.

As a leader in our team of engineers, you will be responsible for designing, maintaining, developing, testing and deploying internal tooling to fight threats relating to safety, fraud and abuse. At GitHub, Platform Health’s mission is to ensure GitHub’s platform safety through fighting malware, spam and fraud, monitoring for fake accounts, countering inauthentic content, battling crypto mining, and other core areas. You will be involved in collaborations across teams within GitHub including integrating our tooling across the platform, contributing to key open source projects and setting the standard high quality tool development to ensure content is moderated, users are kept safe and the open-source community can flourish.

Responsibilities

  • Understand Abuse and Requirements
    • Develop and maintain subject matter expertise in a portfolio of abuse threats to GitHub, our customers, and the wider open source community from all available sources.
    • Partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine requirements for one or more services or complex scenarios.
  • Design Internal Tooling Architecture
    • Oversee, Design and implement the next generation framework and architecture for GitHub’s Internal tooling for governing, identifying, protecting, detecting, responding and recovering from behavior that violates GitHub’s policies such as fraud, cyber attack and abuse.
    • Provides technical leadership through efforts to ensure the correct processes are followed to achieve a high degree of security, privacy, safety, and accessibility across solutions and teams
  • Protect GitHub
    • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with EPD, MSFT and external experts to improve safety-by-design and prevent abuse.
    • Establishes partnerships across teams to plan for dependencies, enables and fosters cross-team communications, and resolves conflicts between teams.
    • Leads efforts to initiate and maintain communication with key partners across the GitHub ecosystem of engineers
  • Advocate for ICs
    • Coach, mentor, manage, and advocate for the career development and needs of ICs.
    • Develop learning and development opportunities for Engineer ICs
  • Lead as a Senior Technical Advisor
    • Cultivate team morale and culture
    • Establishing the teams’ engineering culture and operations
    • Drive operational excellence and long term technical thinking/strategy
    • Identifies best practices and coding patterns and provides deep expertise in the coding and validation strategy
    • Provides technical leadership during code reviews for a solution/product area to ensure it meets the team's and GitHub's quality standards, is reliable and accurate, and is appropriate for the scale of the product feature
    • Improves development quality, development velocity, and team performance through driving execution of strategies for improvement of developer tooling.
    • Shares and teaches others best practices about new tools and strategies.
    • Uses and contributes to open source when possible.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 11+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
    • OR Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 10+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field AND 9+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 7+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
    • OR Doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience in Trust and Safety or fighting spam, malware, fraud, and threat actor activity at scale.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in working with data analysts and or content moderators and an understanding of analytics and data science.
  • A passion for fostering good engineering practices, tools, and processes.
  • Experience in Machine Learning.
  • Experience with Flink, Kafka, and Azure Machine Learning.

Compensation Range

The base salary range for this job is USD $134,800.00 - USD $357,500.00 /Yr.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.
