Overview

Do you want to work with students and educators worldwide to help onboard more learners to the world of collaborative software development with AI? We are looking for an experienced leader to join our Education team to drive our AI/ML strategy and curriculum. The Education team at GitHub is focused on welcoming learners to the world of open software development. We have enabled more than 7 million students and educators to learn to code with real-world tools. GitHub Education provides products and programs for students and educators around the globe, helping them learn and teach computer science in a collaborative, online environment. Through Global Campus, GitHub provides resources and communities for students and educators. Tools like GitHub Classroom and Codespaces help teachers onboard students to a world of open source software development. Working with our student Campus Experts, we create spaces for students to teach each other, share their work and form global communities.

As Director, Product Management, you will anticipate customers’ unmet or unknown needs, assess market opportunities for enhancements or development of new products/services. You will serve as an expert in identifying data-informed, long-term, or overall solution-level investment opportunities, evaluate tradeoffs, and prioritize investments in consultation with cross organizational partners for Education. You will collaborate with partner teams to build golden configurations and lead scenario walkthroughs and thought exercises to identify problems, system friction, and needed contingencies in advance of early customer adoption for multiple feature areas.

Responsibilities

Analysis of Customer and Market Signals

  • Perform user study and validate features via user testing with teachers and students.
  • Travel (when feasible) to support the adoption of Education offerings, and research potential new features (~10-25%).

Product/Service Definition

  • Responsible for defining a vision and strategy for how GitHub Education evolves in the age of AI to support the needs of the business.
  • Identify requirements, write user stories, define measurable goals and communicate priorities to partners and stakeholders.
  • Make data driven decisions for the Product and derive initiatives based on learnings. Go back to the data when needed to answer questions.
  • You will bring to the team a proven track record of building great educational experiences by building strong relationships with teachers and institutions, working across teams within the organization, leading teams in a way that enables them to follow their passion for improving and expanding open source education; a global, inclusive viewpoint; strong empathy for the human and social aspect of software development; and the ability to grow communities of communities at planet scale.

Product/Service Development

  • Collaborate with potential partners to identify and implement complementary features into the product.
  • Influence core product development and direction.

Go To Market

  • Update the roadmap with the latest information and expected ship dates.
  • Promote Education programs and products through blog posts, conference appearances, and webinars.

Product/Service Performance

  • Maintain documentation for the core product and related tooling.
  • Translate the voice of the customer feedback into actionable next steps for the product.

Other

  • Manage product managers, interns, and liaise with contractors as needed.
  • Embody GitHub’s culture and values.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years experience in product/service/project/program management, software development, product design, or related field
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in related field AND 6+ years experience in product/service/project/program management, software development, product design, or related field
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years experience developing educational technologies with familiarity with current landscape and related tools in the ecosystem.
  • 2+ years experience managing end-to-end relationships with external partners, including: vendor management, software specification and delivery, and customer research and piloting.
  • 2+ years experience in people management, leading and developing teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A passion for Education: you want to serve the next generation of developers, create targeted curriculum to onboard them, and help them make their best work.
  • Track record of using qualitative and quantitative data to prioritize and drive decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability utilizing collaborative software development practices (e.g., Git, GitHub) to ship software that drives business impact.
  • Working familiarity with modern ML development stack, open-source libraries, and hosted ML services (e.g. Jupyter Notebooks, Replicate, Hugging Face, Google CoLab, Tensorflow, PyTorch, NumPy, etc.
  • Master’s Degree in Business, Marketing, or related field
  • Ability to travel up to 25% to serve business or client needs

Compensation Range

The base salary range for this job is USD $127,600.00 - USD $338,500.00 /Yr.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.
