Overview

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. The CO+I CTO Office is looking for a Director of Energy Technologies. The Director of Energy Technologies will be responsible for providing advice and guidance to the organization on emerging technology readiness and innovative solutions. We are looking for a motivated, self-driven, proven leader who is creative, talented, and experienced in the role of energy technologies, including their role in the broader energy sector.

This individual will be expected to be knowledgeable of energy alternatives developing across the energy system to support reliability, resiliency, and sustainability in line with Microsoft’s business objectives and goals. They will also be expected to collaborate with industry and other partners as needed to develop innovative solutions.

The Director of Energy Technologies will:

  • maintain deep expertise in industry trends and participate in the development of new knowledge and insights.
  • develop and share insights on innovative solutions for supporting reliable and resilient energy solutions.
  • develop a strategic vision for driving innovation and accelerating adoption of new energy technologies.
  • understand global supply chains, logistics, and risk mitigation for energy technology solutions.

  • This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.
  • Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates must ​relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.
  • This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to 100%.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 6+ years experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development

    o OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years people management experience.

  • 3+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in the energy sector.
  • 3+ years of experience in energy technologies and energy infrastructure.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 10+ years experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development

    o OR equivalent experience.

  • Proven track record in collaboration across teams and with key actors in the energy and technology sectors.
  • Deep knowledge of energy technologies and systems, including energy infrastructure and the electricity system.
  • Deep experience in operating in technical domains and environments that have ambiguity.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills to identify opportunities for accelerated deployment of innovative solutions.
  • Familiarity with data center power distribution, server load dynamics, and processes and their impacts on energy demand.
  • Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to drive projects and operational initiatives to successful completion.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with the capability to leverage data in decision-making.
  • Proven communication and presentation skills, including the ability to convey complex information on risks and tradeoffs in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proven track record of successful engagement in a team environment.

Technical Program Management M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Develop portions of the datacenter energy roadmap, including understanding technology readiness for deployment and resulting priorities as well as the necessary next steps for implementing key portions of the roadmap’s strategy.
  • Identify opportunities and gaps in the deployment of energy technologies, including developing pathways to realize opportunities and address gaps.
  • Guide and coach teams in working to identify opportunities and gaps in the deployment of energy technologies with Energy and Datacenter Engineering to design architecture and integrated solutions for energy assets.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in orchestrating and integrating efforts for the development and implementation of energy technologies. Drive teams to develop the staging and implementation plan for piloting/release in alignment with Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for feature(s)/feature areas.
  • Provide expertise to help teams partner with others to collect technology performance requirements and metrics.
  • Educate and evangelize energy technologies to internal partners.
  • In addition, this role has people management responsibilities, including driving employee growth and development, executing projects, and managing performance.
