Overview
The Azure RAI (Responsible Artificial Intelligence) team is looking for a Machine Learning Researcher/Applied Researcher to join the team as a Research Scientist to build and optimize safety models for various product usages.
The team is focused on how to measure safety and alignment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems to ensure that Microsoft is deploying responsible AI. The work may include doing supervised fine-tuning of large language models (LLMs), applying Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback in the process, and conducting thorough evaluation of those.

Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctorate in relevant field
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience in machine learning, particularly in NLP and deep learning.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or relevant field AND 2+ years related research experience OR equivalent experience.
- Experience with language model training and evaluation is a big plus.
- Experience with research in Responsible AI is a big plus.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and familiarity with machine learning frameworks including PyTorch and Triton.
- Experience with data processing and handling large datasets.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and communicate complex concepts effectively.
Research Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
